Hello, anyone have any insights or a guess how long it'll be before we can burn discs for our PSP.

I think that it won't be possible. UMD is proprietary standard like NGC's minidisks, right?

I don't think it will be possible. It would have been nice, and doesnt seem too difficult. considering it's a format very similar to MiniDisc, which is easily recordable (and fully enclosed). great for audio.
but, i dont think UMD burning will happen. You can, however, convert your videos to MP4 and put them on a memory stick. a 1GB memstick is quite useful for such useasdf -
Ten bucks says it'll happen eventually. It almost has to if Sony wants it's UMD format to catch on as a video playback format. They need a standalone player that can hook up to the television that isn't a PS3. They also need record capability. Most people didn't get rid of their VCRs until DVD recorders were out. Noone will get rid of their DVD recorder until some new recordable format comes along.

You don't NEED to copy UMDS. It is much easier to convert your video to PSP compliant files and play them back on your Memory Stick. This method of watching movies on the PSP takes up only a fraction of the battery life that using the UMD does. On a recent LONG trip, I got over six hours of playback time on my PSP. The investment in a few 512mb Sticks pays for itself very quickly as the PSP movies are between $20 and $30 on UMD.

PSP Video 9 is the tool I use for converting my Video for use with the PSP. You can find it and the guides in the tools section.

Doesn't playing from the memory card not take advantage of the entire screen? I think I remember seeing that you can only play a widescreen flick in the center of the screen, not using the whole screen. From a mass acceptance stanpoint, this is unacceptable. Plus, the average user will never take to something like PSP Video 9. They want to be able to stick a blank UMB in their settop unit, record something and play it back on their PSP.

Nope! I get full use of the screen. It really looks great in fact. The finished files are pretty small too . About 350mb for a 2 hour movie. Also the process is fairly easy for transferring the files to the memory stick. PSP Video 9 will write directly to it if you are using a USB connection. I find it easier just to pop the memory stick into the PC directly but not all computers have a compatible slot. Another nice feature of the program is that you can boost the volume when you transcode. The PSP tends to play UMDS with fairly limited volume wven when you tweak the system setting for playing UMDS at a 2X higher volume.

Yes, you can play MP4 from the memory stick, but from UMD you can play AVC, from memory stick you can play only ASP (@L3 if I remeber correctly, but with PSP Video 9 you can make also hacked MP4).
