I am completely new to this. Forgive the stupidity but here goes. I have been reading the articles, especially the "10 DVD Newbie Tips." The first tip describes the importance of setting the region for your DVD drive. It tells you how to do it but presumes one would know the correct "region." My two DVD burners are Sony burners. How do I find out the correct region for my drives?

you should't have to worry about the other regions unless you want import dvd's

    REGION 1 -- USA, Canada
REGION 2 -- Japan, Europe, South Africa, Middle East, Greenland
REGION 3 -- S.Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Parts of South East Asia
REGION 4 -- Australia, New Zealand, Latin America (including Mexico)
REGION 5 -- Eastern Europe, Russia, India, Africa
    REGION 6 -- China
REGION 0 or REGION ALL -- Discs are uncoded and can be played Worldwide, however, PAL discs must be played in a PAL-compatible unit and NTSC discs must be played in an NTSC-compatible unit.

Usually, when you insert a dvd into your PC, your software player will inform you that you need to set a region and display the dvds region, in your case region 1.

I live in the USA. So my region is USA? (That was easy!) I thought it had something to do with either the burner or type of disc. Should I just leave it blank unless my software prompts me? Or should I go ahead and set the region? My software is Nero 6, and it did not prompt me when I burned my first disc.

    Thanks so much!

Your DVD drive is probably already set to region 1. It's easy to check out ... just go to start > control panel > system > device manager > select your DVD drive ...
