    My LG DVD recorder (standalone, not computer drive) can record video in 1, 2, 4 or 6 hours mode. Would the audio quality be different too or just video?

    Probably both, although image quality will suffer the most as that is where the most savings can be made. Many recorders list the various rates at different settings somewhere in the manual.

    Usually not. Most machines record audio at 256k, a few do 192k. Some 224k. All are fine for AC3 or even MP2 to a degree.
