  1. I recently purchased a projector. So the other day a friend of mine dropped by with 'Meet the Fockers' DVD. One look at the DVD cover and I could make out it was a pirated copy. I thought maybe it was a ripped version of the original but to my horror it turned out to be a 'screen cam'. The sound was terrible, video was pixellated and at a couple of places we could see a shadow of the person moving across the screen. I watched half of it and went to the kitchen to prepare dinner. To my disgust my friend was not bothered at all. He was quite happy to have spent just £2.50 for the DVD.

What amazes me is the overseas open-air piracy markets. On the way home from Iraq, I met up with my old roommate from college wherever he lives in RUssia (don't mean any offense, I can't spell it or pronounce it). He had just come back a few weeks earlier from KL (kuala Lumpur - spelling?)and he had a copy of Troy, which had just come out in theatres. The picture was beautiful, it had DD51 and DTS, subtitles in several languages (a little off in spelling and words) and even had previews for movies that were coming out on DVD soon and movies getting ready to hit the theatres. It was a pressed copy on a DVD-9. I'm not advocating piracy or bootlegging, but it cost him approximately $2 US. He had come back from there with about 15 movies that cost a total of about $25. I don't know hos they did it or got away with it, but these were not cam copies or SVCD to DVD, they looked (after buying the original when it came out) every bit as good as the real thing. I know it's the way of life over there, but why the foreign versions of the MPAA are not all over this I'm not sure.

    Mods:
I apologize for discussing warez, but I think I have an excuse. I was away from TV, Radio, Newspapers, and even the Internet for 3-5 months at a time. I didn't even know this movie was not out on DVD or still in theatres when we were watching it.

  3. one problem they have been going through is the film companys will hire a company to make a legit DVD for them, but said companies are leaving the production run going and are making some copies for themselves.

leading to a situation where movies are being released in high quality before their original release date.

  7. very rare, but it does hapen. other times someone will get a pre-release copy. last week on big brother 5 in australia one of the rewards was letting the housmates watch Mr and Mrs Smith. meaning they had a full copy of it from somewhere. i have been wondering when that copy will hit the street.

I've always said make the pirated copies legal. If Sony gave someone the option to sell these copies legally then they would be in control of it and still get some $'s for it instead of it all going to the pirates

we all know how cheap a copy can be made now so why not charge what the pirates do and kill major piracy that way

those who want the fancy official packaging with the pretty extras can then pay the over rated prices for it all if they choose
