  1. I'm considering building a computer for HDTV receiving and recording so I have several questions for the experts here.

Who makes a good HDTV computer card?
Will these cards receive satellite HDTV?
Any idea when we will be able to buy a HD DVD burner?

Also I was wondering which DVD burner format I should consider and how much they are going to cost? Thanks for any help.

What kind of HDTV? There is over the air, cable and satellite for a few. If satellite, then your satellite receiver dictates what kind of card you need.

For cable and over the air, depends where you are in the world.

Also, what do you want to view it on? Do you want to record it or just watch on a computer? View on a HDTV monitor? At what resolution?

As far as native HD burners, you may have to wait for Blu-Ray and other newer formats. And they won't be cheap for starts. HD burns up a lot of standard DVD room very fast. Most of us downconvert to DVD specs.

I don't mean to get complicated, but the subject itself is.

I want to use it for satellite.
I have a HDTV DLP so that's what I want to use to view and record the satellite HDTV.
I don't know the resolution, you tell me (I believe my TV will display 720p and 1080i).
If the burners are going to be expensive at first then I guess I want to be able to record to a hard drive and just wait for the prices of the burners and media to come down a bit.

In that case, why don't you buy a HD DVD recorder? HD is only used for HDD recording, but that's what you want.
Latest are from Sony and Sharp, the HDD is up to 400GB.
For example Sharp DV HRD 300:

    or
    Sony RDZ-D5

    burns even DVD-R DL.

First, we don't know what country you are in or your satellite provider or your HD sat box model.

Quick Answer: Ask your HD satellite provider if they provide a companion HD PVR. You might be lucky and find they support a D-VHS VCR interface. I know of no sat box that provides other than monitor outputs that are not encrypted.

Long Answer: Most HDTV cards are for over the air (OTA) reception only. Some offer QAM tuning modes (for cable) but these tend to be of limited use since all but local channels are typically encrypted.

Interception of the Y, Pb, Pr or HDMI monitor feeds is actively discouraged by most satellite providers. There are no high def consumer cards that will do that that I know. An engineered solution may be possible with more data. Expect this approach to require use of expensive parts such as component to SDI interfaces.
