Tried to backup "Closer" which only came out today, but Columbia have gotten rougher and more sneaky with the ARCCOS protection they put on their discs. ried everything, but no go. Tried DVD Shrink, DVD Decrypter, VOB Blanker, tried in two different drives, but nothing.

It seems, that this version not only uses Dummy Sectors, but also Multi-Angles and Interleaved VOB files. DVD Shrink gave me a weird "Out of Memory" error, which I hadn't seen before and whenI tried to read the disc through Reauthor first, it read as FIVE separate versions (angles -- like on some Disney discs, I've seen before) and would not process. VOB Blanker saw Dummy sectors in more than one place in the Cells list and cells were linked back on each other i.e. interleaved and I couldn't preview anything. Really nasty. Decrypter bombed out on the first main VOB (1_1), so it couldn't handle this version of ARCCOS.

Just thought I'd let the posters here know, and if anyone has any suggestions, fixes or comments, please let me know.

    Try AnyDVD.

Give it time, DVD Decrypter will soon be updated (hopefully) to rip these dvds.

  3. Last time I saw DVDShrink have an out-of-memory error was on "The Forgotten". Whereupon I ripped with DVDDecrypter in ISO Mode, opened Shrink, reauthored, and removed the blank 20 seconds or so at the beginning. That worked fine. My next step would have been to consider trying some combination of these settings in DVDDecrypter:

Settings -> General -> Check for Structure Protection (check) -> Removal Method -> Aggressive. File Mode -> Multiangle Processing -> all options on the right checked. In ISO Read Mode and IFO Mode, all options to remove PUOs checked. CSS -> Options -> Detect Mastering Errors.

    Good luck.

Maybe I'll go buy that movie just to see if I can back it up.
    Pull! Bang! Darn!

  4. Closer came out today? Are you sure? I think its been in the stores for months. Latest Decrypter should handle it.

  5. Amazon lists a release date of March 29, 2005 for "Closer." This website states the most recent DVDDecrypter is March 21.

Depends on what Region you are in. Here in the UK, the release date is 6/6/05. So its not yet released here.

You obviously didn't read the full title of the post. As in most cases, the R1 versions usually come out weeks or mainly months before the R2 releases. I only had a loan of the disc from a friend, before he delivered it to a Video Rental shop, so it's gone now and I can't try again.

Also, I tried with the latest versions of AnyDVD and DVD Decrypter and no go. Although, only with the standard FILE READ settings in Decrypter.

Nope I didn't buy the region 2 version but at first I did have problems ripping with DECRYPTER using my TOSHIBA DVDROM's. I ended up using my PLEXTOR 708A drive to rip.

  18. Here's another idea regarding this dvd -

do not buy it or rent it.
let it sit and rot on the store shelves.

That was before I realise DVD Decrypter site was shut down. Its a pity though. DVD Decrypter is a great tool.

    So you were attempting piracy?

  25. Maybe just "time shifting" - since the disc had to be returned?
This one deserved rw media, aka - erase it and use it over . . .
