  1. Do you think that packages like DVDShrink have taken the fun and kick away from DVD copying? In case of (S)VCD there was so much to do - ripping, de-mux, tweaking, authoring, burning, etc.; so we could actually watch and enjoy what we were doing. I feel that packages like DVDShrink have taken the fun away. They are definitely a boon no doubt. Please have your say.

No, i think its good to keep things as simple as possible.

But then again, it means you have less control over what the resulting output will come out like.

I think most people will use a combination of tools. For example, I use:

    DVD Decrypter to rip
TitleSetBlanker to strip out extras, bonus, intros, FBI warning etc
    DVD Shrink to compress
    Nero or Decrypter to burn.

I think it would be nice to see more quickie packages. I'd personally like to see a utility where you'd put a DVD in your machine and, with the click of a mouse, would backup PAL DVDs in NTSC format (and vice versa).

If anything has spoiled us, I don't think it's the utilities themselves ... it's the fact that most of them are freeware.

all the kick should be taken out soon.

    i'm getting verbatim dvd+r DL, 20 for $45.

1:1 backups are now in a decent price range for me.

but getting back to the specific topic at hand.. i'm glad these all-in-one packages are around, now people dont have to spend hours and days learning how to make a backup, and it can be done quickly.

do you really think average joe consumer is going to wait 8+ hours for a movie to transcode?

No. I am an Oracle Applications DBA and technical specialist. I work extensively on Unix where commands are cryptic and most commands have options like:

    Code:
    <command_name> -<options>
The option could be a combination of a thru z and A thru Z.

    I like to be challenged.

That does not mean that I don't like simplicity. I love that also. It is just that having struggled a bit and then come out with the results you wanted may give a sense of achievement.

I personally think that DVDShrink is a godsend, as it and DVDDecrypter are pretty much all you need from Rip to burn and there's not really too many spots to go wrong. Throw in VOBBlanker and you've pretty much covered the functionality of all commercially-available products with freeware, resulting in (generally) excellent results, and at a great price

I do miss the days of using something like IFOEdit, and if the main movie was too big you either had to re-encode or split to two discs .... ahhhhh, those were the days ...

I think that things needed to be "NOOB-ed up" to cope with the influx of "enthusiasts" that bought a DVD Burner because they are so cheap and expect just to be able to go to File > Copy and not have think about anything. A lot of all-in-crap-one tools are ordinary IMO to say the least, due to a lack of options and flexibility. I realise all this is to make it easier for those "mere mortals" ( ), but I like to be in the driver's seat ...
    If in doubt, Google it.

Would be $75+ for one 20-pack if I had to join.

thats still not a bad price.. the cheapest i've seen them outside of sams is walmart which has them for like 3 for $20.. there are quite a few sam's club locations in my area, only one (and its kid of out of the way) has them.. the rest have the 9 for $50 deal.

but still, if you were to join, you could buy a few packs and stock up.. not to mention they have decent deals on SOME other computer related stuff.

and if you're hungry you can troll the food aisles.. i love sam's club, its like an exercise in gluttony.

  17. I still use Gordian Knot to make my .AVI films. I'm a control freak. However, DVDShrink makes a fine job of my DVDs and so I tend not to worry about it.

Surely the control-freak-friendly packages are still available. For those who don't want to worry about the few stray pixels though, DVDShrink is brilliant.
