I am using this guide here:
http://members.dodo.net.au/~jimmalenko/AVI2DVD.htm
FOR converting Divx To mpeg 2 DVD Compliant video. It works like a charm except one WEIRD snag.
I am converting 4 30 minute DivX videos. I was having a problem with the subtitles running off the screen, so I had been choosing "CENTER - Keep Aspect Ratio" under the advanced tab in TMPGE Plus.
Everyone works fine, except the one- It REALLY puts it center. There are HUGE black bars all around the video. The other 3 shrink the video size just enough so you can barely see a black "square" around the picture. But the one video REALLY condensed it (to what looks like only 2/3 of the screen size) and leaves a HUGE black box around it
I followed the directions on that link about precisely. What is going on here?
Also, how can I tell if the original frame rate of the source file is 23.976 or 29.97?

GSpot will tell you the exact framerate of that file.
I have always chosen "Full screen (keep aspect ratio 2)" as the output aspect ratio and "1:1 AVI" as the source aspect ratio.
Sorry I can't give you a definite solution to the problem. -
This is how I do it,
source aspect ratio : 1:1 (VGA)
Video arrange Method Center (custom size)
680 by 456
It seems to work well, it adds black borders around the pic, this works for Naruto episodes, you might have to play with the custom size a bit but then again, different tv have different overscan areas. -
