Is it a simple way to repair audio on dvd back up?

Hi:
I have a bunch of dvd backups from old tv shows. the video is ok but sound is only coming from one channel (right speaker only). I don't care about stereo sound I just want to get the sound to play out of both channels together.

Open the avi in goldwave.
Copy one channel to the other one and save as a new mp3. Or save it as a mono mp3.
Open the avi in virtualdubmod.
Select Streams->stream list and delete the current audio and add the new mp3.
Select Video->Direct Stream Copy (just copy the video)
Select File->Save avi.

In goldwave goto edit/channel right or left,choose which as the audio,then go back to edit and copy and paste as new and save as stereo wav.

Open the AVI in Goldwave and save as WAV, 16 bit stereo, signed. No editing or copying or anything is needed.

If they are large files, you may want to extract the audio with VirtualDub and then open the WAV file in Goldwave and save as WAV,16 bit stereo, signed and then reinsert them into the AVI with VirtualDub.

To save WAV in VirtualDub...

File > Open > Audio > Full Processing Mode > Uncompressed > File > Save WAV.

To insert 16 bit stereo, signed WAV into AVI in VirtualDub...

File > Open > Audio > WAV Audio > Full Processing Mode > Compression > MPEG Layer-3 > 16 kBit/s, 11,025 Hz Stereo.

A simpler method though would be to open the file in VirtualDub and choose Audio > Full Processing Mode > Conversion, (sampling rate) 11025Hz, (precision) 16 bit, (channels) Stereo. Compression > MPEG Layer-3 > 16 kBit/s, 11,025 Hz Stereo. Choose Video > Direct Stream Copy > File > Save AVI.

That way wont work if one channel has no audio and the audio is stereo to begin with which is the case here.By the way that sampling rate is way too low,best to use 48khz.

If I understand correctly, it`s DVD backup.That would I interpret as mpeg-2, not avi files.
I would extract mpeg and audio (using vobedit), convert audio to stereo (Goldwave or CoolEdit) and convert the wave to mp2 with headac3 or besweet.
Remux with ifoedit or similar and burn.

It looks like im almost there!
I was able to do what I wanted in goldwave plus more! I copied one channel to the other also I discovered how to increase the sound and reduce the hiss that was there but now im stuck again. I tried to save the file has a MP3 but it would not let me do that, it came back saying I didnt have a MP3 encoder. I then tried downloading the lame file and it still didnt work. At that point I saved the file as a wave. Now I need to know and also need help with the following: How can I get Goldwave to accept my file as a MP3 file? and or is it necessary to save it as a MP3 file or Is it ok to leave it like is now saved (a wave file). I need to know now that I have the file saved how do I get rid of the old file and add the new file I made. I believe you guys were saying to use virtualdubmod to do this step but im not having any luck or should I say Im not sure of the steps. It like being in the desert seeing a cold glass of water but can't quite reach it! I was finally able to achieve what I wanted but can't complete it. These are DVD backups that I have but im working with the files that was downloaded to my hard drive. I hope that helps and im looking forward to completing this task

Who knows what he has? He hasn't given us much information and no screenshots, so all we can do is assume. As far as I know, one of his speakers could be shot or isn't hooked up.

I have never seen a stereo audio file with no audio on one channel and one channel audio files should be heard on both speakers.

As for the compression ratio, I can't see encoding low quality files at anything higher. If they are high quality captures then I will encode to a decent bitrate. If I'm burning a low quality file to DVD then XviDToDVD will automatically convert it to 48Hz.

I would just use VirtualDub MPEG-2 then, the exact same way that I would use VirtualDub but we don't know if his back-ups are Data DVDs or not. I don't personally burn TV shows to DVD unless I'm doing it for a friend. I put all my videos on Data DVDs and only back-up Store bought DVDs to Movie DVD.

If you want Video, you have to use mp2 not mp3. Use headac3 or besweetfor converting wave to mp2.

I used TMPGEnc to convert my wave file to MP2 file. I have infoedit but im not having any luck remuxing the video with the new audio. Any one can help me with the steps to use infoedit or another tool I can try and use to complete this task?

Why did you use tmpgenc to convert Audio? Better use a dedicated program for this.

Im now using headac3 to convert to MP2. can anyone give te steps on how to use infoedit to remux the new audio to the video. Ever time I try it I get a error message.

I can't believe you've been working on this problem a week and still don't have it figured out.

If you use VSO DivXToDVD, it will turn your 1 channel mono VOB into a 2 channel AC3 Stereo VOB without any need for audio convertors or other editing programs.

You didn't help us out any by not telling us what you were working with in the first place. We don't know if you're working with VOBs from a DVD back-up, whether you backed up your files to AVI on a DATA DVD or what.

If your files are AVI then you'll need to use VirtualDub as mentioned above before converting to DVD or you'll have to convert the VOB a second time to get it Stereo. I believe the same process would have to used with MPEG also.
You might be better off using a program like rejig which will take the MP2 file that you've already created and join with the M2V file to produce a VIDEO_TS folder but I don't want to confuse you any more since it seems like all these different answers have you pretty confused as it is..
