Currently I've been converting my VHS tapes and oh boy is it a challenge. I think I finally found a program that likes me. avi2dvd just didn't work right for me.

I'm currently using the following workflow:

    1) WinDV

    2) TMPEnc Plus

    3) TMPEnc DVD Author

and then finally, I will burn with Nero. I've never experienced problems with Nero, so I'm sold on them.

Anyway, is this a pretty good workflow?

Yep, it looks good. Instead of tmpgenc plus you can try(try the demos) mainconcept mpeg encoder or canopus procoder or cinemacraft basic if you would like a bit faster encoding. The video quality is kinda similiar.

That's what I use for DV > DVD and it works for me. I also use VirtualDub Mod for occasional rough editing and filtering, then frameserve that to TMPGEnc. (Saves HD space) I either burn with Nero or TMPGEnc DVD Author.

Study the guides for TMPGEnc Plus and you can fine tune the encoder if needed for optimum quality.

If you don't use AC3 sound, that's one thing you can add.

For a quick DV > DVD, I also use VSO DivXToDVD.

    Hey Guys,

Thanks for the input. I'll definitely check out the other programs and guides you mentioned.

I can now see how a person can get so involved with creating video material. I can also see how a second computer would come in really handy.

    Good budget solution.

CCE Basic and Procoder Express are encoders that are only about $60 each and may be more alternatives. But I like TMPG too. I actually prefer Procoder for DV source work.

I'm guessing you don't edit, or just do basic editing in TDA (cut off unwanted footage).

Yeah, right now I'm just doing raw VHS footage and making masters. The footage isn't in the best condition, and I'll be experimenting with noise filters and what not eventually too.

Yeah, if youre needing filters, what you're doing sounds fine. I wouldn't change anything. TMPG has good filters.
