  1. It worked fine before, but now whenever I try to cut and save (direct stream copy) a cut video file, the new video file always start a few seconds before the "mark in."

The AVIs are divx/lame CBR mp3.

What could be causing this and how do I fix it?

    Please help...thanks.

the reason this is probably happening is because you are cutting at a non-key frame.. press the key forward & back button and you'll see the locations you can cut at.

  3. Well I used to be able to cut a non-keyframe and the output plays correctly.

If you can only cut from keyframes, wouldn't that make it pretty much useless?

It depends on the codec as to where the keyframes are. DV-AVI has a keyframe every frame, Divx/Xvid have an I frame perhaps every 200 frames depending on how they were encoded. This is why some codec are great to edit with, and some are better for playback.

  5. If you want to cut at non-key frames you will have to re-encode I believe. (Full processing mode)

Which will allow Virtualdub to create new I frames at the edit points. I suggest if you are going to do this, make sure you have all your edits in place and make this the final version, as every re-encode costs you in quality.

    How about fast/normal recompress mode?

  8. If you don't use any filters in VDub fast recompress should work.

You only need to re-encode the last gop. Cut to the last I frame before where you want it cut. Then just re-encode that part. Saves time encoding and helps keep the quality.
