This is a Digital-8 Camcorder, not a "Hi-8" as your question implies therefore the best way to capture is via firewire or iLink as Sony calls it. Then you can use Mainconcept or whatever and encode at any resolution and bitrate you want.

The newegg ad should have mentioned Digital8.

Transfer your video with WinDV and then encode as was said. I would use 704x480. The camera is good out beyond 352x480 resolution.

Consider a different model with "Analog Pass Thru" feature if you want to capture analog sources (like VHS or cable tuner) as well. You will be glad you did someday.

If you insist on degrading the quality right from the start, Ulead DVD Movie Factory can transfer DV and encode to mpeg on the fly. It can also transfer direct to DVD if that is all you want to do. A 30 day free trial is available for download.

But if you want to do it properly, and get a final DVD with quality not noticably different from your camcorder footage, transfer as DV avi and then encode.

Get a standalone DVD recorder with a DV firewire input. Pioneer DVR-210, DVR-310, DVR-320. JVC DR-M10. Panasonic DMR-E60, DMR-E65. Lite-On LVW-5001, LVW-5007, LVW-5005, etc. Even the iLO units at Wal Mart have a DV input jack. Record at max quality (XP, 1 hour per disc) for hand held camcorder footage. The results are very good... practically identical to the source. Super fast, super easy.

Some of these units can be purchased used off of eBay for less than $100.

Ulead products use a form of that encoder and will pause the tape if your capturing directly to MPEG if your computer can't keep up with processing the video as it's being played. Possibly it will work with another capture tool using that encoder but I would imagine there is going to be issues sincee the source is not digital.

I'd suggest you get hardware encoder such as the hauppauge 250 or use a DVD recorder if you want to go directly to mpeg. Neither the cam not the capture card you have is the best tolls to do that.
