  1. I would like to be able to check e-mail while out on the road. I need to check e-mail between customers from my car. From a lap top would be nice.

Right now I check through my phone but the towers are few and far between so reception is poor.

Some sort of mobile satelite system?

Yeah, SatPhone service is expensive, especially for modem units. Better off just getting a modem card through your favorite cell phone carrier and paying to have it work on any carrier networks, and also equip a good strong WiFi card with NetStumbler just in case you come across any WLANs with internet access.

I use my laptop when I'm up at my cabin but since I get zilch for any carriers and don't pay for broadband up there I go into town to one of the two coffee shops with free wireless to check up on things back home. So if the above "roadside" combo doesn't work you can find someplace in town with wireless. If it's free you can use the above combo to pick up on it from your car in their parking lot more often than not.

They have those things at the airport you can use. I never used one, but I see them.

I never realize how far a wireless network can travel. I just have my new computer today and the wireless, it says there are 5 wireless networks out there. They are all unsecure. I wish I know who has these unsecure networks, I should warn them to secure it. We live near a parking lot so anyone can drive up an hack their computers.

  5. Anything through a phone service is out. Just not enough towers near me.

I don't travel that far. 100 milles or so from my house during the day. My work comes through e-mail so I need to check it often.

I did notice a guy parked on my street with a lap top. He said there are hot spots, which he mark on his map, of were he can stop and, from his car, check e-mail.

    That seems viable.
