  1. I recently purchased a DVP630 (UK Version of 642 I think). I tried some divx files and that was when I discovered that it only plays them as 4:3 files. (confirmed by one previous topic here).

I phoned philips, and the nice but knowledgeless chap, said during the conversation, both that it would play divx files in 16:9 if they were the right size; and that no players anywhere played divx in 16:9. This did not help me much.

I bought this player because in has many good reviews and, although it was good value, this was not my main concern.

I have not seen many complaints about the lack of this function and I am confused by this. It does seem to do everything else. I expect the next firmware upgrade will enable it to cook breakfast in bed.

    May questions are:

Please confirm that this player does not play "widescreen" divx, and if not, tell me why nobody is bothered!

Are there players which do display "widescreen" divx properly on 16:9 tv's? If so, could you recommend a few models as it does not seem to be a function commented on, or specified, much?

Thanks for any guidance you can give.

  4. You need to set the DVD player according to your TV set.

    Use remote:

SYSTEM Menu --> VIDEO SETUP --> TV DISPLAY --> 16:9

My Pioneer DV-575A plays DivX files in their original 16x9 mode and simultaneously kicks my LG TV into widescreen mode without me having to adjust anything. Both items are full UK spec.

  6. Steved,
I can confirm that the DIVX widescreen files playback at 4:3 on my widescreen tv. I also find this ridiculous.

I have setup my player to play 16:9 , but to no avail. They playback at matted 4:3 and I need to zoom in to actually view the film fullscreen on my 16:9 tv.

I think this is ridiculous, especially when yuo try to view a film that contains subtitles... The subtitles are displyed partly over the matted black bar (lower) and if you zoom in to fill the 16:9 tv screen, you loose the second line of text in the subtitles. Totally ridiculous.

Both of my players(tested with all 3 firmware versions) will play 16:9 widescreen. The source file obviously has to be recorded in 16:9 and as stated above, you have to choose 16:9 output in the video menu.
