Hello. I am having a really hard time trying to backup a backup. I tried Shrink, Dvd Decrypter, DvdFab and I always get an error. I tested it on several backups and not a single one was able to rip. I also tried different drives, but no go. I even tried to copy on the fly with Nero, but I got an error half way through. I read through the Sticky above and it didn't help. If anyone could give me advise I would really appreciate it.

Are you sure that you're not having a media problem?
My oppinions may change, but not the fact that I am right!

It might help to give more detail of your problem.
like which program/s you are using and the error with that particular program. Tell us which drive's your are using.
To me it does sound like bad media issue if you are unable to rip a back-up.
back-up normally do not have copy protection. -

"I thougt it might be a media issue, but every single backup I tried freezes up when I try to rip it."
Wouldn't the freezing be caused by bad media. I had this same problem when I 1st started to do dvds. I had bought a 25pk of memorex dvd+r and after using them all, I finally figured out that not all media was created equal. I then bought some verbatims, and went to make copies of my backups onto high quality media instead of the crappy memorex, and I had trouble getting the files from 7 of the dvd+r's. I just kept at at with decrypter, shrink, and also just tried copying files to harddrive. I finally got all the movies backed up. I'm not sure how the 7 eventually worked, but they did. All this trouble with these dvds, started only 3wks after i had finished the last of the 25pk.
use good quality media. I myself like Verbatim MCC and Fuji TY.What We Do In Life, Echoes In Eternity.... -
Thanks for your replies. I will try describe it the best I can. Whenever I try to rip any backup in Shrink I either get "cyclic redundancy check" or it freeze while "Analyzing". With Decrypter I get errors have way through and when I try to ignore them they just keep popup up. DVDFab just takes forever to rip, but than I get an error.
I tried, both a DVD drive and a NEC writer on 2 different machine and the same problem happened. I also tried a Verbatim "movie reel" DVD-R with a MCC media code and it is the same issue. -
You try cut, copy, and paste? Create a new folder and try that. works for me

hmm.....I've never had any problems with MCC. I'm out of answers for now?

NEC drives are known not to be the best readers. Cycle redunancy errors are generally caused by scratches or smudges on the disc. I would suggest you try ripping those backups with another dvdrom or dvd burner other than the NEC dvd burner. I've experienced cycle redunancy errors and used my other dvdroms and dvd burners to read the disc. Amazing that my PLEXTOR 708A drive was the only one to read the disc correctly. You can try ripping with VOBBLANKER but in my opinion it sounds like the drives you're using aren't able to read the backups. That's my 2 cents!I will try describe it the best I can. Whenever I try to rip any backup in Shrink I either get "cyclic redundancy check" or it freeze while "Analyzing". With Decrypter I get errors have way through and when I try to ignore them they just keep popup up. DVDFab just takes forever to rip, but than I get an error.

If you have scratches on the discs you can try using toothpaste to remove them. It has been reported to work by other members of this forum.

Hey Chip, When you first posted, I was thinking you were talking about maybe a certain Copy but it sounds like you are talking about any copies..Originally Posted by Chip718
If that is the case, I have other questions then
1. Are you having problems copying your own copies?
2. or are these someone else copies?
3. Do you know what program and burner was used to make these copies?
4. Are you using any CSS removal programs to rip the copies
As for #4, if this is the case, do not use the CSS program. I have heard of some people having problems when they try to use a CSS removel and the DVD is not copy protected! ! ! ! -
yes - try this , and not a "ripping" programOriginally Posted by dvdguy4"Each problem that I solved became a rule which served afterwards to solve other problems." - Rene Descartes (1596-1650)

Works for me. It was just a thought.

Wash your disk in water & pat dry. This works for me. A laser can see dirt that you cannot.

1,2: Yes. I am having trouble trying to backup my own backups. I first tried it to see if it was possible, but when none of the disc would backup I wanted to find out why.Originally Posted by HAMP
3: Almost all my backup were either done with Shrink or Fab. Maybe 1 or 2 where Nero.
4: As far as trying to rip the copies I tried Shrink, Fab, Nero and IsoBuster and the closest I got was 99% with Shrink and than I got an error. I havent tried making a copy of the folder yet, I will try that when I get home.
Thanks again for your replies. -
This doesn't help you now, but in the future, try checking your backups after you make them by running them through Nero CD/DVD Speed or DVDINfoPro or something to see if you have any read errors.
Read errors will usually allow a disk to play on a standalone DVD player, because they ignore most read errors, but will cause copy programs to hang because they need to read every sector of a disk.
Try different media to make sure you find one that doesn't cause read errors in your backups, then stick with that brand. Constantly switching brands to "whatever's on sale" can cause problems. Also, sticking with a brand which you erroneously believe is working can cause problems.
When you do find a brand that works, keep checking the manufacturer's ID when you buy new ones to make sure the disk company hasn't switched manufacturers. If they do, you may have to go back to square one. -
Have you put labels on them? Many people are having problems reading labeled DVD. If they are labeled, remove the label and try again.
Some days it seems as if all I'm doing is rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic -
Something sucks here. Is it really possible to get error on EVERY backup, and it be a media issue ? I don't think so. How did you do those backups in the first place ? Secondly, have you actually played through those backups and they were ok ...?

i had a crap stack of memorex and had to copy them to some fuji(jap) i had no trouble ripping them to HD and burn back with decrypter. if decrypter is having a problem reading it and it was backed up with no flaws then it can only be the media, one of my drive s reads better then the other. what drives do you have?

This is some strange stuff, Only thing you have not mentioned is what CSS removel program/s you are using?Originally Posted by Chip718

if not any of those or a combination of some, please name them. -
a backup copy would not have CSS

Yes, they all had labels on them. Let me try removing 1 and see if that helps. I will report back...Thanks againOriginally Posted by normcar

"a backup copy would not have CSS "
True, but if it was made with dvdxcopy, it should have some protection. -
My brothers friend uses it DVDXcopy and it says cannot copy backup a backup at the end. Thats what it says on his dvds backups anyway. Ive never seen it personally but been told by my bro. Is this something that someone's ever come across? He says it does have some kind of protection on it. What kind of protection does it have that dvd decrypter cant read
-
That was a feeble attempt by 3-2-1 Studio to skirt around the issue of "archiving" DVDs. DVDXCopy put in a check to see if the "source" DVD was copied with DVDXCopy.Originally Posted by dvdguy4
You can use any DVD burning software to create a copy from the DVD created by DVDXCopy. -
Ok, I do know this, if you read my first reply I do say this. Maybe I should explain why I ask certain questions.Originally Posted by BJ_M
The reason I ask about which CSS removal program/s, some programs will remove the CSS protection on the FLY as it is transcoding, and more then likely will save the CSS key in the registry. Since the copy does not have any protections on it, the program may still try to use the key as a reference point and possibly causing the problem. -
I just tried to copy and paste a the VIDEO_TS folder on a Ritek -R with no label and I got an error. I also tired to rip the same disc with Shrink and I got a redundancy error at 54%. I am really at the end of my rope.

get a new dvdrom or a rip the disc with someone else's dvdrom/dvd burner.
