  1. I am in the beginning stages of selling some of my scientific video to a small educational publishing company whose product is almost entirely consumer DVD-based. My sampler was just the standard consumer DVD format. The email from him this morning said:
"I can't use the footage that you've already sent since it's not in the
proper format to download. If you place it on a DVD it should be as DVD-ROM."
In my initial email, I offered him DVD, MPEG or miniDV tape. I have also mentioned that I could do AVI, but the file would be huge. I could compress it, but most of the AVI compression software that I've seen noticeably degrades image quality.
I have ask him for clarification, but I would welcome further input about industry standards from you all.

My guess is that he is looking for just the mpeg files on a data DVD so they can do their own authoring. If you send him an authored DVD he has to go to the trouble of demux the parts he needs out of the whole, somthing he does not appear to be inclined to do. It seems to be to do with how they author and publish, which is different to what you would need to do if you were publishing yourself and send it of to a duplicators.

  4. Thanks for the information. Actually, I rec'd an email this morning from these folks and they want a mini DV tape. What their reasoning is, I don't know.

They want to do their own encoding and authoring. Yes, it may be fancier, better quality, and more complex than your authored disc, but then again, maybe not. Also, they may be just doing it to get more money from you.

What is their relationship with you supposed to be?
    "Developer"?
    "Dub House"?
    "Distributer"?...

  6. Your contact in this company obviously works at the sales end. he must have discussed your case with the guys doing the work.
With it in dv tape form they have more freedom to cap and edit and encode the way they want.
