When trying to convert my avi file to Mpeg format, i get the error mesage "Invalid file format".
I heard its something to do with the fact that my avi file has Ac3(?) but i have no idea how to fix it.
Can anybody help me?

AC3 ACM Decompressor will allow you to read AC3 directly from your source file but volume level will be too low unless you use the "Normalize" function in TMPGEnc.

If it was a simple matter of AC3 and no AC3 decoder I would have thought that TMPGEnc would load the file anyway, just without audio. Are you sure that you have a suitable video decoder installed?

well i've installed the AC3 ACM Decompressor and yet, any time that a file has AC3 audio on it, the program goes halfway and comes up with the error:
INVALID FILE FORMAT
Are there any other tips you could give me to try and fix this problem?
I actually wanted to use Tmpgenc to put subtitles onto a file.
Is there a way to put permanent subtitles on an AVI file? -
you can convert the ac3 to wav and use the wav as audio source, www.videohelp.com/virtualdubaudio
or
just convert the video in tmpgenc, empty the audio input. add the ac3 audio back to the mpg later if you are making dvd.
