Just found this. I downloaded the wmv version but then saw there was a dvd image. So I am going to wait a couple of days until it has downloaded.
Looks really professional though.

ive seen parts of it. so far, troops is still my all time favorite SW fan film. -
The special effects are great but geesh couldn't they have gotten some better actors? Its seriously kinda painful. Any student actor would have been glad to do this for free, and they would HAD to have done a better job.
And what the hell is up with the bottom letterboxing? Its not black its kinda grey with light beams splashed on it, and its pixellated. Its kinda like watching a movie from a HUD. -

There's an easter egg on the main menu. Hover on the left side of the menu and a rebel sign appears. You play a very silly little game and if you win you get to see stormtroopers dance.
They made this film on 20K. That's pretty good. -

That's just a link to the ftp site that the film's creators are hosting it from. You can also get that link from their homepage. I was getting between 300-400k off of it as compared to about 30k from the torrent link.
I'm watching the extras now and its really great stuff. I like it better than the film, but that's not to say the film isn't good too. I'm especially impressed with the big space chase scene. Very professional and entirely cgi. -

If you go to their web page they have a whole section written up about this and a somewhat inelegant fix. Apparantly some ftp programs don't properly recognize files over 4 gigs if used under XP. I think that 263MB is basically that amount that exceeds 4 gigs. I used the same process as you for disc 1 and used FlashFxp for disc 2, because I had the same problem as you.

I just finished watching this and I must say... I really dig the special effects!!! The CGI was great! Unfortunately, the characters were very wooden and not very developed at all. I really had trouble understanding who was good, who was bad... Who died, why they died... who was a Jedi... who wasn't... Really, what happened in this film? I think I got the main plot gist, but because the characters were so poorly developed, by the end I really didn't care.
Very impressive looking for 20k...
Somebody needs a little help with characters though. -

Well (ahem), this is a "fan film." My first thought after watching the entire 2-DVD set (film and all extras) reminded me of what a reviewer said about "Battlefield Earth" ... that it was the most elaborate high school play he'd ever seen on film.
THE PLUSSES - The acting wasn't all that bad. I'm willing to forgive even the cheesiest acting if I get the impression that actors are "trying" their best ... and that's the impression I got. I also have nothing but praise for the costume design & makeup people and the people who did the musical score. Considering what they had (or didn't have) to work with, those people would do well in any major Hollywood studio.
THE MINUSES - Seeing the trailer and a few snippets earlier, I thought I'd be mightily impressed with the CGI. I wasn't. True, they didn't have much to work with and there is a lot of talent at play. But, I honestly felt that, most of the time, I was watching a "video game" with characters passing through the scenery. And, as smearbrick1 said, the writing left me scratching my head. There was no discernable character development ... and even if a film is only 47 minutes long, a firm grip on who and what characters represent is needed to appreciate them. This is not an actor problem, it's a script problem. These comments refer to DVD #1. What follows refers to DVD #2.
First, I think they went overboard on the menu design. We've all been to websites designed by people who were "sure" that everybody used the same browser and display size they did (and were wrong). I have a 27" screen. But God help the people who try to navigate this menu on a small TV screen (unless they have reading glasses).
Secondly, the "Special Effects" extra ... and two or three of the "Principal Actor Bios" extras were pixelated. This pixelation was from the beginning of the extra to the end and did not bleed over into other extras. So, I'm assuming the root files they used were corrupted ... and not my burning of them (on Taiyo Yuden DVDs, I might add).
OVERALL - George Lucas & ILM, watch your butt. This film was done for less money than most people spend on a new car. And what can be done now in a 32-bit environment will certainly improve in a 64-bit environment (CGI-wise). If higher-res CGI was used, if the fan/actors had had a little drama coaching, if the script had been more skillfully written, and if the film had been closer to the 2-hour range, it could have easily competed with the big-budget blockbusters. -
Yeah that basically sums it up. It did look like a video game overall, but what I was so impressed with was that every so often there would be a shot that was really believable. Like those shots of the guys inside the Tie Fighters. The little laser tracking lights, the way the camera slowly rolled sideways, it felt just like the actual star wars movies. You can really tell that they divided the shots up among alot of different cgi guys. The quality of the effects is all over the place, but some of it really good.
If they'd only extended the dialogue scenes more they could have explained away alot of the plot holes. For instance, how did the emporer's hand even find out about the temple? She would have had to learn about it from the sister. But while the two jedi are in a rush to find each other, unlock the information from the holocron, and race to the temple, the sister is sitting in that work camp for what, was it like 3 months she said? They needed an interrogation scene explaining why it took so long to get the information and giving her an actual reason to show up at the temple JUST in time to intercept the jedi. All in all, it really didn't make much sense but the overall idea is pretty good.
I've also gotta admit that I laughed out loud at that one liner after they accidentally blew up the huge ship. That was classic.
And what is up with that chick's face that plays the emporer's hand??? I've never seen a person whose forehead and chin sticks out further than their nose. -

Question to anyone in the know. They mentioned the type of software they used to render this film. Was there perhaps "better" software they could have used? Or, could it have been better rendered using available Mac software (on a Mac, of course)?
Anyhoo, overall, I think this production team did a "great" job with what they had ... and I hope this isn't their last (or longest) fan film. -
Just a brief PS on Sammy Davis, Jr. ... and first, let me say I have no idea of whether this is true or not. I heard it years ago on a radio show discussing the Rat Pack. It's not listed as an urban legend on Snopes ... so maybe it's genuine.
Apparently, Sammy Davis, Jr. had scheduled himself for plastic surgery to reshape his flat nose. The surgery went well and his nose was healing properly. But, while leaving his surgeon's office after a post-operative checkup (in mid-winter), he slipped on an icy sidewalk and fell flat on his face ... re-flattening his nose. At that point, he just said "To Hell with it," and decided to leave things as they were.
