Burning speed that you TRUST without checking disk

Tech LEVEL changes and I wanted to know if I should bump up my 4x burning to 8x or 16x.


As if 4/21/05 what burner/media/speed/best software are you useing so you are 99 percent confident that you don't have to check your burn to make sure it is PERFECT!

No offense to the question/poll, but this is pointless as every media/burner/firmware will vary in what speed it should be burned at. Will I get good results with Princo 1x at 16x? No. Will I get good results with 16x media at 1x, actually probably not. Can I burn my CMC 2.4x at 8x with good results? Yes. Can I burn MEDIA001 2.4x generic discs good at 8x, or even 2.4x for that matter? No. Can I burn Ritek G04 well even at 8x on my NEC 2500 with it's current FW? Yes. Can I burn Ritek G04 well at 8x on my Benq 822 or with the original FW of the 2500? No.

See where I'm going with this? :P

I'm trying to get feel for if people are staying at 4x or have moved up to 8x or 16x as standard speed of burning stuff without the NEED of verifying the data.

Depends on the media. If it says 8x, I burn at 8x. If it says 4x(haven't seen them in a while) I burn at 4x, if it says 16x, I burn at 16x.

I must be rather lucky since I haven't made a coaster in over a year now. I do not check my discs with any scanning software, but instead use the disc as intended. If I've backed up a movie, I watch the backup. If I've backed up a game, I install and play the game. If I've put data on the disc, I recall the data back to the HDD. I've found that in most cases, errors reported in those software test programs are a little exaggerated anyways. So if it works, that's all that matters.

In answer to your question though:

Media: Memorex and Sony Exclusive (Taiwan or Japan both work great here)
Speed: Recommended speed on media
Software: Nero Ultra; DVD Decrypter; DVDClone; DVD Shrink; AnyDVD

I wouldn't burn at any speed without verifying the data. I also verify the burn by running it through a standalone DVD player before being assured of a good burn since my standalone is more picky about media than is my writer. Why would anyone NOT verify data with all of the questionable media out there? I've used many different types of media, and even those with the great reputations will still have occasional bad burns at rated speeds. Why take chances?

Me too verify at all speeds, always. Usually burning at max speed, but if a certain media seems to have medium scans when burned at for example 16x i try burning the same image at 12x to see if it the scans improve. If not i dont buy that media again. For 8x disks i dont try lower speed when bad scans, thats too slow when the calendar reads 2005 and i doubt it would improve anyway, since 8x is already too slow with modern burners.

Lite-On 1633s giving me fits at 8X on 8X media (Ty's).

Sony DRU500 & 510 never a problem and never needed to check with any media.

So my answer is depends on burner/media/Software.

I changed two things Drive & Software. Even with the Sony's I would do test plays with new media to be sure it was OK, Always was, Even Princo 1X was Ok, had mixed resul;ts with Princo 4X, If they burned Ok, then they played Ok, but some became coasters.

Old Nero 5.5 wouldn't work with New burner. So new burner & software. Don't know which is a problem with Tys for media. Should be the real thing as they are from brand name (Fuji, Sony, etc.) company and bought at B&M chain stores.

In other words, you have no idea how many coasters you have on the shelf. Wouldnt it be a good idea to burn at 8x with verify, that should take you only a little more time compared to burning at 6x.

i'm useing latest nero ... doesn't verify disk take ALOT of time... last time I checked was a year ago... and it took a very,very,very, long time!

update me ... how long does a nero verify take you?

I verify with DVDDecrypter mostly, sometimes DVDInfoPro speedtest, doesnt take long, 5-6 minutes maybe. Was some threads about Nero and verify around here last year or so, many ment it was not very reliable. Have no idea how long it would take with Nero as i havent been touching it for 4 years+, dont want that shit on any PC of mine ever again.

Current speed you are usually burning at that you don't feel the need to verify.

for myself:

I don't verify a08/verbatim 8x media/burning at 4x useing latest nero because it works 99.9 percent of time... provided I stay away from computer as it's burning!

I 'verify' almost every one of my burns, using one or more of - Nero CD Speed's transfer rate test plus a PI/PO test, not to mention playing the discs. That's REGARDLESS of the burn speed, burner, media. Yes I test discs that I've found to be very reliable less often, but cheaper media I test almost every single burn in one way or another at the least. I NEVER use any 'verify' setting with Nero or Decrypter, they're not as reliable a way of testing a disc.

Even if you listed only one MEDIA CODE the answers would vary by the burner and the firmware. Your question is far too encompassing to have a single bit of meaning. Should I answer 1x for old Princo discs? Should I answer 8x for my TY discs? Should I answer 4x for my Prodiscs, or 8x for the other Prodiscs? Should I....

i burn all my disks at 4x that way i dont have to check them cause i know they will be good when using good media..

even if the disc is rated 8x i will still burn at 4x just to be on the safe side..

I understand for you it depends on alot of factors... as you say. I was mostly trying to get a feel for if I'm in the middle of the average burn speed or not... seems like I'm in the middle.

As for verification ... up until a few months ago... I stopped verifying everything ... I do random verifying ...because I'm useing the ... same media bought at same exact time ... same computer... same software... I get consistant results.

Just as improvements developed in cd-r media and burners a few years ago ... I felt confident if I used the same media bought at same time, in same burner, in same computer, it worked all the time... with random verifying.

Verifying EVERYTHING is what you feel SAFEST doing as of April 05! Right

Maybe a new topic could be ... How many people verify NOW ... 6 months ago I use to verify everything I burned. Too time consuming and I found I get consistant results ... that I randomly verify... provided I test the media batch I bought and everything else is the same.

I buy media in batchs 500 at time.

8x for me,that's the max my writer can burn.
I have burned >200 DVD's at 8x with my BenQ DW800A and the errors are consistantly low(PIE <50).
I can vouch for BenQ's write quality when using TY or MCC media,I rarely scan anymore.

i burn at 12x on 8x MCC dvd+r's with a benq 1620.. never had any problems with the hundreds of discs i've burned, and neither has anyone else i've given them to.

Yep, for me it's media I trust, not burning speed. My good 8X media burns just fine on my 8X burner. My less than good 4X media is untrustworthy at lower speeds too.

well my pioneer 107d burns all at 8x always

my new 108xla burns most 8x media at 8x nicely
although mmcs can go 12x but never do that

got some new verbs 16-rs
but they only burn at 4x in the 108xla
using newer firmware, not sure which
i should be using either...
they burn 8x in 107d w/exc results

This is a brief list of what speeds I'll use when I'm really in a hurry and do not have time to verify every burn. Unless I'm in a big hurry, however, I still verify every disc burned.. I'm not saying anyone else should trust these speeds, or endorsing them in any way. It's just my personal trust levels based on my experiences with the listed types of discs.

very nice feedback ... sounds like I'll probably be boosting my speed from 4x to 8x ...

i think i will experiment and do 10 burns at 8x and see if any of them go wrong by verifying. And if 10 for 10 useing the same media (ty01) , I'll jump to 8x as COMFORT speed with random verifying provided I use the same media(bought at same time), same computer,burner,software.

I burn at 1x or 2x (depends on drives firmware) to archive. If I dont give a sh_t, I do half of the max speed rated. If Its a time issue and I dont give a sh_t, ( I still pray ) I'll do the max speed rated of the media.


I do this for CD media also. The slower you burn the better it is. It will give the laser time to make a more accurate and more perfect groove burn.

At higher speed I get a lot of buffer underruns.
