HI there,
Can anybody help me with the following. I am converting Divx movies to SVCD. However I have noticed that the converted mpeg file has glitches. The sound is just fine, but the image just jumps slightly. I don't quite know how to explain, but it stutters slightly once in a while as if it skips some frames. It doesn't make the movie unwatchable, but it is a bit anoying.
The original Divx does not have this problem of course. I hope somebody has a solution.
Elmer

What was the framerate of the DivX and what framerate did you encode the SVCD? If you changed framerate it could cause jerky plaback.
Does the SVCD only have these problems on your DVD player or also when you play it on your PC? If the SVCD bitrate is too high (+2500Kbs) your DVD player could have problems if the CD transfer speed of the drive is too slow. -
The frame rate of the divx is 23 fps (thats what is says in the properties of the divx). I encode the movies under the SVCD Pal template. So 25 fps. The bitrate is 2000.
I have the problems on my PC as well. So it's not my standalone DVD player, its the Mpeg file...
any idea? -
Could be field order ... try flipping the field A/B bottom / top option in TMPGenc (forget what it is called but it is on the advanced tab). SVCD is interlaced and if you get the field order backwards your video stutters like you describe.

elmbo,
What encoder are you using. I had the same problems when I first make XSVCD. Then after many trials, I finally came up with a stupid idea but guess what, it work. I'm using TMPGEnc. to encode. I load the DVD template then unlock it and change the settings to SVCD setting (remember to select "Inverse 3:2 pulldown"and it came out perfectly. For the bitrate, I use the bitrate cal. to max my cd.
Or you could use Sefys Template which works with TMPGEnc too. Jordan -

Well this is your problem. Use the NTSCFilm template to encode in TMPGEnc, not PAL. If PAL is the only thing that works for you, I suggest you do a forum search on NTSC to PAL conversions. There have been numerous discussions of this in the past. -
I'm using TMPGenc to encode. I'll try what you guys propose. I must say I will not be using NTSC as I live in Europe not the States, my TV does not support NTSC.

Many DVD-players can convert from NTSC to PAL so your TV's capabilities may be no problem. Just try the NTSCfilm template and see for yourself. -
I tried the NTSCfilm template and you where right. It was just fine, no more stuttering. At least on my PC. Oh, and on my TV as well. But.... In black and white
The image and sound quality were perfect, just the darn color was gone. I have a Pioneer DV-343 by the way. If I encode in PAL, I do get color (with stuttering of course).
Can anybody help me solve that problem? Maybe that it has something to do with how I burn the VCD?

Hi. First letīs talk about your colour problem. I had the same problems. By the way it is similar with NTSC-DVDs and itīs no problem of the vcd. You have to change your DVD-player settings. Search in the manual for a chapter about manual NTSC/PAL selection. As far as i can remember it has to be a button combination. Over a OSD you can select different settings. Switch from "Auto" to "PAL". Probably now the picture should be in colour.
So, now my problem. My mpeg files have the same "stuttering". And it`s definitely no frame rate problem. The output file has had the same rate like the input file. Maybe someone has another idea. Marcus -
Just a guess as to stuttering. Divx is really just a hack of one of Microsoft's codecs. Since we're talking compression, when you try to encode one compressed format into another you may pick up transcode errors. One possible fix would be to first encode to uncompressed AVI, then encode that result into your favorite MPEG format. It worked for me.
