I've been avoiding Nero since they added all the extra junk to it most don't seem to need or want but I was looking through the tools section today and noticed a comment about installing just the Burning ROM. Unfortunately, the poster of that comment gave no details of how to do it and the other comments seemed to confirm what I remembered about there being no custom install option. Still I decided to take a look at the latest version and see if I could figure out a way to do it. Turned out to be pretty simple, haven't tested it much yet but seems to work just fine, thought I'd go ahead and post it in case anyone else wants to give it a try.

    1. Install Nero (if you haven't already done so)
    2. Start it up, enter your serial, make sure it's working, etc... (")
    3. Copy the Ahead folder and Nero start menu folder to a temporary location
    4. Uninstall Nero
    5. Copy back the parts you want from step 3 to their original location
    6. Start Nero and re-enter your name, company and serial

    That's all folks.

What's the problem, it's only 331MB. Are you installing to a PDA or something?

Hope you updated first. The typical CD is several updates back.

Well for one thing I've noticed problems during certain format conversions with the codecs Nero installs and I just don't like being forced to install a bunch of bloated buggy junk I don't want or need. Somehow I'm not surprised someone who quotes the entire original message when they're the very first comment would not share that opinion. :P And as I said, I used the latest version. Also I tried it again the next day when the new latest version came out with no problems.

I don't mind the stuff that Nero installs with the base package - it's the stuff that I have to put up with in order to get Recode onto my system that PISSES ME OFF.

I have NO desire for Nero Showtime, and its system-taking-over ways.

I was forced to upgrade to the 6.x versions when I got a newer burner, or I would have stayed with 5.x.

I use Nero for burning DVDs and the occasional CD, but never to encode, create or do any the the stuff that it does so poorly.

I would be happy to just disable all the extra crap, so I won't hit buttons like 'Switch to Nero express' when I meant to hit the 'Burn' button.

I agree about loosing the bloated, unnecessary stuff.

A while back, when in contact with their tech guys:
I asked them to consider allowing a basic download of just the burner, after the dwlds crept up towards 30mb every month.
    Failing that, an optional installer.
We don't all have broadband or want it...

My argument was: it would save their server being tied up.
Most of us that want a sound editor or the other progs have better dedicated ones anyway.

    .
The install package for my printer was 230mb, the only one available if you had to download. Of that I'd probably guess 1 or 2 mb's was the drivers needed to actually run the printer. It's always been a pet peave of mine the way these companies insist on installing a bunch of crap on your system you don't need. Then to top it off thewy'll add a whole bunch of shit to the startup folder.

I want... Nero Burning ROM... and Nero Recode. That's it. That's all. If I could find a way to forcibly excise Showtime from my system, I certainly would. ARGH.
