  1. am i the only recording hbo"s adult oriented show?? deadwood..

i plan to have season two backed up on to 3 dual layer dvd"s.. i will be making custom menu's for my set and i will keep them in a 3 dvd case with artwork on the inserts of the case..

if there is only 12 episodes in season two i will have them on 3 dvd"s in pro-quality..without commercials its going to be an excellent gift for my dad who is a deadwood nut..

i think i am the only one who likes swearengen evil ways and alma garrett is fine two!!!

you could probably buy the official release for less or close to the price you'll be paying for the 3 dual layer dvd's.. its probably wiser (cheaper) to put them on single layer discs.. and you'll have a more room for bitrate.

  3. uh lumis you are aware of the fact that dual layer dvd"s hold four hours of video in SP mode correct 4.8mbs per sec at 720x480 is plenty of bitrate i will need more than 3 if there is more than 12 eps..

i was putting 2 eps on dvd in SP mode and the quality is also pro quality i just would rather have the set on dual layer media regardless..

and i can buy a 3 pack of dual layer media for 15.96 and get every episode while if i where to buy the official release when it comes out next year i will be paying $99 for it..

i think having anything in HQ mode is a waste of space but thats just me i dont see a difference *YET* between 4.8mbs and 9.5mbs on movies..

okay lets do a little math.

    material cost:
    $15.96 divided by 3 = $5.32 = cost per dual layer disc
    (the cost you provided me)

    $22.99 divided by 50 = $0.46 = cost per tayio yuden dvd-r
    (http://www.meritline.com/taiyo-yuden-8x-dvd-r-silver-thermal.html)

    bitrate
first, i'm going to assume you're using ac3 audio with a bitrate of 192kbps. if its higher or lower, the video bitrate would be adjusted proportionately..

seeing as how you've indicted you the recordings you're doing have a bitrate of 4.8mbps that would mean you're recording approximatley 3 hours & 42 minutes per disc.. which would give you a bitrate of 4808kbps per dual layer dvd..

if you were to divide that in half, you would be recording 1 hour and 51 minutes per single layer dvd, which would give you a bitrate of 5298.. a difference of 490kbps.. over a 10% increase of what you'd achieve using a dual layer dvd..

    conclusion
you're paying almost 6 times as much per dual layer disc that provide over 10% less video quality than 2 single layer dvd-r's would provide you.

what brand of dual layer dvd's are you using? i havent heard of dual layer discs being that cheap.. on the other hand, i've provided you to a link with taiyo yuden dvd-r's (recognized as the best quality dvd-r's)

    you cant argue with archimedes..

cost, quality & workmanship.. the only rebuttal i could see you having is that you'd get the series on 3 discs, instead of 6.. but when all things are considered i believe most would agree that its just not worth it.

by the way, amazon has the first season for $69.99 with free shipping. (its a 6 disc set too, like i suggest you do with the second season)

I'm watching it right now on "on demand". Did you know Deadwood was the second place in the US to have telephones?

  6. It's a great show. Did you know that the same actor who plays Wolcott also played guy who shot Wild Bill in the first season?

  7. did not know that johnny...

lumis remember i am not using some cheap crappy capture card i am using *gasp* a dvd recorder!!

the picture quality is the same as if i was using single layer media..do you even know what dual layer media is??

its 2x the space and the same video quality with double the recording capacity i dont know where you got your information from but your are sorely mistaken about dual layer media.

again i am putting 2 epsiodes per dvd on one dvd+rw then recording 2 more then finally reathoring the 4 episodes with tmpgenc dvd author then lastly burning it with no compression with nero burning rom..onto one dual layer dvd...

again picture quality is the same there is no compression besides SP mode on the dvd recorder..

and i was comparing the price of dual layer media to the price of the deadwood season two boxset when its released NOT the price of single layer media..

lumis i can tell you hate dual layer media with a passion as you bashed it twice already in two my topics.

and your right about the price its expensive..but to me its worth it.

kenmasters83 he is referring to the fact that a dual layer DVD holds a little less data than 2 single layer DVDs. But since you are simply dumping the files to disk and not re-encoding, this is immaterial when it comes to the quality you are getting on these DVD sets. Like you said, the quality you would be getting either way is what SP mode of your dvd recorder creates. I don't think dual layer media is cost effective yet either, but if you want that much content on one disk there is no other way.

yeah, noticed that too. Ya know what, he still plays the part of slimy, low life creep you just want to throw to the hogs!

I gotta buy this series- can't always watch it.

  11. It's hard to say which character is worse, Wolcott or Jack McCall, although Wolcott would be much more dangerous since he's connected with Hearst of the Comstock....

I thought the same thing! I dont think that is a good idea, double casting of sorts.

  13. I honestly didn't recognize that it was the same actor, but personally I don't mind it. On the other hand, now that I know I constantly picture him as Jack McCall. I'd be curious to see some of his other roles to see if he'd remind me of Wolcott or McCall....

  20. Having some knowledge of the language, I can verify that Blazanov, the new telegraph "apparatus" operator's Russian accent was very authentic. Moving on, I came across a link to Deadwood's Adams Museum. It has short bios on the real people behind the characters on the show.

Good news! I saw these announcements:

    News

HBO RENEWS DEADWOOD FOR A THIRD SEASON, WITH WESTERN DRAMA TO RETURN FOR 12 EPISODES NEXT YEAR

LOS ANGELES, March 30, 2005 - HBO has renewed the Emmy® and Golden Globe® winning western drama series DEADWOOD for a third season, it was announced today by Carolyn Strauss, president, HBO Entertainment. Created and executive produced by David Milch ("NYPD Blue," "Hill Street Blues"), the show is scheduled to begin production of 12 new episodes later this year, with debut set for 2006 on HBO.

"DEADWOOD is a dazzling and unpredictable show that has connected with both subscribers and critics," noted Strauss. "I'm thrilled that David Milch will bring us more episodes of this intriguing series next year."

Kicking off March 6, the 12-episode second season of DEADWOOD has already sparked critical raves, with the New York Times calling it "absorbing and addictive." New York's Daily News observed, "I fell in love with it...a phenomenal place to visit," and the Washington Post hailed DEADWOOD as "unlike anything else on TV." Giving the series a grade of A-, Entertainment Weekly described it as "one hell of a great gimmick-free Western," while the Boston Globe termed the show "an occasion worth celebrating," and the Chicago Tribune said DEADWOOD was "a classic in the making."

DEADWOOD was nominated for 11 Emmys® last year and won two Emmys® (Directing for a Drama Series - Walter Hill and Sound Editing for a Series). In addition, it received a Golden Globe® Award, for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series - Drama (Ian McShane).

DEADWOOD is produced by HBO Entertainment in association with Red Board Productions and Paramount Network Television; created and executive produced by David Milch; executive producer, Gregg Fienberg.
    Plus, there's this:

    Young Actor Dies

Damon Daniel Weber, 16, died on March 30, 2005, from a post-transplant infection he fought like the lion he was. He made his television debut on Deadwood 10 days before he died, playing the boy leaving town as William Bullock arrived.

  21. JohnnyC- I didn't even know there was a place actually called Deadwood let alone real bio's on the people (other than Hicock).

Not to change the thread or anything but let me ask you- how fictional is the Carnival series? I've been compelled to watch that one much like Deadwood- just can't all the time (kids, too late, tired, etc.) Like I said, gotta buy 'em.

historically based with fictional characters. Carnivale is a great series.I highly recommend it if you like DW.

  23. I liked Carnivąle a lot, but from what I could tell it was mostly fictional. However, there may have been historical figures that Brother Justin and a few other characters (like the radio guy) were based on. I tried to locate the Gospel of Matthias (if memory serves), but could not. I might add that as far as I know it hasn't been renewed for a third season. I've written to HBO and urged them to renew it. I'm asking all fans to do the same....

Yeah,a 3rd season reprise would be nice. I tought it certain but they might leave us hanging. What is up with Sophie!!!!!!
    Quote Quote
  25. It's clear she's Justin's daughter, so I guess she figured this out and was motivated to save him at the end of the last show. According to the sorts of metaphysical theories the show appears to be based on, there has to be balance in the universe. That means there has to be someone to offset Ben Hawkins, whether it's Justin or Sophie, just as there can't be either of them without someone like Ben. This may also explain how Ben's (and apparently Sophie's) healing abilities work. "I just move life from one person (or thing) to another," as Ben told Samson....

  26. well i managed to put 6 episodes onto one dual-layer disk with 10 percent compression and the picture quality still looks the same which is good..

who ever made dvdshrink is a brainiac and is much appreciated person i think i will donate a few bucks to the creator since he saved me about $6..the price of one dual layer disk..

so i have 13 thru 18 onto one dual layer disk..

i now have to wait until hbo shows the last six then will have a complete set of season 2 onto two dual layer dvd+r disk's..

currently hboonedemand has 19 and 20 i will just wait until they get the last 4 episodes before i even bother with the final disk..

oh yeah i watched part of EP 20 earlier did anyone see that crazy guy that plays on the movie identity on deadwood EP childish things??
