  1. i usually use tmpgenc author but i've been messing about with DVD lab pro and i think tmpgenc wins hands down.
first of all when i play file in preview there is no audio and i'm pretty sure ive done it correctly.
secondly if you want to cut out frames it is far easier to do in tmpgenc.
thirdly tmpgenc is far more user friendly.

Totally different applications aimed at different audiences. Too many home users are used to all these nice, friendly features that aren't required in a professional environment where the assets are all prepared in advance and the functionalit of the disk the primary concern.

DVD Lab Pro does not give audio in the preview, so you have done nothing wrong.

Tmpgenc DVD Author is easier to use and more beginner freindly. If you want to create a simple menu faster, it is great. If you want to create more complex disks, with menus with functionality that requires coding and complex structures, then DVD Lab Pro leaves tmpgenc DVD Author in the dust.

It is horses for courses. If you need something that is easy to use from the start, creates menus quickly, and can edit assets because they weren't done properly at the outset, Tmpgenc DVD Author is a good choice.

I use DVD Lab Pro because it can do all these extra things. I don't need audio in the preview. I do need more complex design options. I create menus in after effects and photoshop, and import them into DLP. I prep all my assets before authoring, so I don't need to edit. I'd rather these superfluous functions be dropped in favour of more complex menu design features because that's what I need.

I'm happy you have found an athoring tool that meets your needs, but you need to compare apples with apples in the right context, or the comparison is meaningless.

You shouldn't miss that point that at http://www.mediachance.com/dvdlab/dvdsc.html there is a "Special Buy" for TMPGEnc DVD Source Creator

  7. Unfortunatley, TDA doesn't even get a second look for me. Since my video rig isn't connected to the internet, it's not an option for me. Too bad, I hear it's a good authoring program.

I bought it before they started doing that and when I went to them to see if there was any other way around it, they said no. I asked for my money but they wouldn't give it back. I don't even know where it is anymore. I gave up on them, too.

But I can't live without TMPEGenc Plus. I bought that with TDA and at least they haven't completely screwed it up, too.

My editing machine is off the internet, as well.

I can understand their paranoia but I don't think TDA is good enough to steal.

Just to clarify. TDA itself does not yet require an internet connection for License Verification. It is required to use the AC3 plugin.

Oh, yeah. I forgot the specifics. I think I was troubled by this, as I wanted an AC3 encoder at the time.

    I use both.

I like TDA for quick simple jobs, with simple menus.

I like DLP for it's extreme flexibility. I have just started playing with DLP and have only made 3 DVDs with it. I am a little miffed or confused with DLP and the input video. I edit and output everything as DV-AVI and I typically use TMPGenc Plus 2.5 to encode to MPEG-2. In DLP, I drop the video file on the timeline, I then drop the wav file on the timeline but the output DVD has no sound

I'm sure I'm just not doing something right, but I haven't had time to sit down and work at figuring it out just yet.

  12. Don't use .wav for DVD audeo. It's that simple.
Transcode your audio to AC3 externally, then import.
DLP works much better with properly prepared assets (so far), although a better audio transcoder and video encoder are on the way.

I have made a set of standard templates in photoshop that I can load into DLP, so I use it even for very quick jobs. DLP is aimed at a different audience who generally have a different workflow to home users, so the extra-cuddley features aren't the priority features.

  14. TDA is great to start with, but for the amazing amount of features DLP wins hands down. I've just started playing with DLP and whilst a little tricky to begin with, you really have to persevere and be patient, after you get the hang of it its a lot better.
