I finally opened and started to use my 50pk of Maxell 8x that I got on sale at Staples for $14.97 awhile ago.
In close inspection there are specs of dust and lint all over the media. The edge of the media is not as clean as the 4x MXL RG02.
I now have to dust the writable side of the disc before burning. (Didn't have to on 4x MXL RG02)
I use a Kinetronics StaticWisk sw-060 to do this (cheapest $21 online). It neutralizes the static cling and safely sweeps away the lint and dust. You have to be careful and clean the brush after each use or else it is like using a cloth, it will scratch.
My next batch of DVD-Rs will probably be Maxell Pro, or TDK Armor Plated.

simonko,
I bought the Maxells from Staples also. Was your cake "made in japan?" There were about 30 cakes in the store I went to, and they were all "made in taiwan," except for the one mij cake I bought.
I haven't opened this cake yet, but I will tonite just to see if mine have the same dust/lent problem.
How did yours burn? -
Store spindles have long had some degree of dust, since 2001. Not all, but many. Never wipe your media. Get a can of compressed air and blow a quick jet of air across it. Problem solved.

Can air? That will put you into the poor house about $7 a can (use once). Plus it doesnt get rid of the static charge and more dust will just cling to it right after you blow. (heh probably the dust you just blew off)
Kinetronics StaticWisk is to be used on film, camera lens, and scanner beds. I dont see why dvd media would be any different. (muti-use, use many) -
Blow the dust off yourself then....you might get a few particles on the media but hey, you can save $7.

Or you might have something like this in your household:
