So...2 dvd's.... I don't care if I go to VCD/SVCD/DVD or even DIVX..
Anybody figure out a way or how to section it into segments?
I'm thinking....2cd's/1 DVD for the 1st. disc
1cd/dvd for the 2nd. disc.
Any other suggestions?
Thanks,
Jason

I'm doing 2 cds first cd and 1 cd for the second cd which has chapters 32-44...not going to rip the last chapter as it's just credits. I use DVD2SVCD.
-
I got to tell you the 2nd disk is trouble smartripper will select the comantary not the movie you have to burn it different. Vob 6 slects the french version be careful with this one..
-
wrnoc2..there is no french version...it's just the audio track you selected happens to ben in french..select another audio track and listen to it before you encode...
btw...i'm a sucker for quality..made it into 5 CDs -
WOW!!! 5 cd's !!!
I'm going to do the movie for myself on DVD, but my buddy who doesn't have alot of money does not have a DVD player, but can watch them on his laptop.
I'm thinking of getting him the $79 Apex unit for Christmas from WalMart.
So...If I do it for quality...is that SVCD then? or just higher bitrate mpeg1?
Thanks,
Jason -
even though 5 CDs may seem like alot...it's over 3 hrs...don't think a 3-disc VCD would be able to produce any significant quality....
higher bitrate without the higher resolution of SVCD is nothing...although i've seen some crappy SVCDs and some really good VCDs
btw...the dvd rip doesn't have to be forced to be split the same way as the original DVD...what you can do is put the vobs from disc 1 and disc 2 together, renaming if necessary
i.e...if disc 1 is something like this vts01_1 and ends in vts01_5...then you can rename the vobs from disc 2 starting vts01_6....dvd2avi will still think it's one continuous movie
...but keep in mind there's a size limit to the .wav file created by dvd2avi...if it's too big media player won't be able to play it and tmpgenc won't be able to incorporate it into your rip...mainly this prob has come up before in really long movies such as pearl harbor, titanic, apocalypse now redux, godfather: part II, etc... -

I had a hard time ripping the 2nd Pearl Harbor CD with smart ripper until I figured out that I needed to unlock the chapters by playing the DVD in drive (as usual), but instead of just clicking "play" to unlock the DVD for ripping process (as usual), I needed to open the "chapter select" option on the 2nd CD. Once you do that, smart ripper will rip the 54 minute remaining movie, instead of "just" the commentary.
BTW, I used 4 cd's for my encode and I encoded it to divx, excellent quality! -

This is my FIRST movie burning attempt. Now, I am thinking if I can get this right, I can do ANY movie. I am sure glad I got on and read this stuff you guys were talking about, or else I would be in a total mindblow! Thanks for giving me some tips on this.
I thought I read that if you encode to Divx, that it won't play on your DVD player. Is that true. By reading the mountains of info, I got understood it that to watch a movie you burn on a DVD player (NOT on your computer) that you have to use mpeg1,2, or DVDmpeg? I am new to this, so help me out here, PLEASE??

The Big ass wave file.
I have found out about this wav file size limitation when doing "The Green Mile".. and you are right,, TMPG will not encorporate the file when encoding... And yes media player will not open the file,,, but some no name media player I use for playing MP3's will.. it is called...MplayMan... so I was able to verify the sound files was ok...
What i did was take the wav file, and compress it using lame to mp2, 192 specs...
Then just multiplexed the mp2 and the video together...
Worked great...

Hi Tracey,
As far as I know, the “current” stand-alone DVD players will not play divx files. You can only play divx on the computer. Although, I have heard of people able to copy divx files onto a CD and (with some method unknown to me) able to play with a stand alone dvd player. If this is true, I would like to learn how to do that.
I started encoding VCD mpeg –1 and after I pretty much got the hang of that process, I wanted to experiment with divx, and learned how to encode divx files. I truly enjoy the clarity of divx compared to vcd. And since I watch all of my movies on the computer any ways (don’t have a stand alone dvd player, only on computer), I decided to just stick with encoding divx, and it’s easy and twice as fast in my case.
I do sometimes encode vcd for my Aunt cuz she has a stand alone dvd player and she enjoys the quality of my creations. My vcd encode method is:
Smart Ripper to rip vob files
DVD2AVI to extract wav file
Then TMPGEnc for the actual encode process
I usually just encode half the movie one night and the 2nd half the next night. Takes approx- 14 to 15 hours total.
Then to copy it to cd I use Nero (Video-CD)
I have a pretty good template to use with TMPGEnc, it’s set for an encode of mpeg- 1, 2pass VBR at approx 1500kbps (you can adjust to your fitting) and the end results play well on a stand alone dvd player.
Divx process, very simple
Smart Ripper to rip vob files
Then I use FlaskMPEG to load vob files and encode to divx. You gotta have the mp3 codec installed and the divx codec installed.
Process takes approx 5 to 6 hours for the whole movie
For a lot of people, using flaskMPEG is outdated, but for me it works great.
On this web site http://www.vcdhelp.com there are a lot of helpful "how to guides" that'll teach you.
Also at http://www.divx-digest.com/ there are forums and guides that can teach you also. G-luck
Any other help or suggestions I can assist with just whistle

Not sure what #'s they are but I could tell you to follow these steps if you are using smartripper.
Pop CD#2 into the dvd drive and when you get the screen that says "play" "sceen select", etc, instead of choosing play, choose "sceen select" and pick any random chapter to play the movie for about 15 seconds.
Then stop the dvd from playing and use smart ripper to rip CD#2. It should have the correct files to rip as default (already selected). It'll be approx 54 minutes long. Just make sure that the 54 minute file is selected and you see "I think" 13 chapters remaining
G- luck
