I like many others am new to the conversion process. Is there one program which will take an avi and convert it to vcd or mpeg in one easy step. I have a copy of Nero but it won't recognize my CD burner. I've tried almost every other converter out there and nothing seems to work. I thought it would be easy to convert one format to another, man oh man was I wrong. The biggest thing is my kids VHS tape (Birthday Christmas ect.) will not last long and I wish to convert them to vcd to save them for years. Need help before I give up and pay some one to do it.

Nero is the best I've found so far.
I had the problem with Nero not recognizing my CD-RW. It turns out I was using the wrong serial code. My writer is an LG so I used that but for some reason, it wasn't among the LG writers supported. I still don't understand the entire explanation they gave me
Anyway, they gave me a serial code for OEM and now my Nero works fine. Just made my first VCD last night! You may want to try that.

If you want easiest tape to vcd, then that has to be using an ATI AIW card and capturing direct to vcd compliant mpeg1 files, Quality is not great but very, very watchable and it is two steps, capture and burn, that is the easiest way I know of.

You can use Nero to convert the AVI to a VCD MPG, however the Quality is really not the best.
I would recommend a simple TWO step rather than a ONE step, the results will be a lot better
1) Use TMPGenc (Follow the links on the tools page) and when it loads up, load in the AVI you want to convert, click on the load button on the right hand bottom of the screen and select either VCD PAL or VCD NTSC (depending if you live in the USA or britian) and click encode/start
When that has finished take as a while
2) Open up Nero and select new VCD and load in you newly created MPG file, click burn, wait a while and the enjoy
On the Nero not reconising the burner problem, it could be the that you need the lastest version of nero 5.5.6.2 download it from their website, or as said before it could be a license key problem, if so check with the shop/person that gave it to you
Hope that helps
