No big deal as I've already purchased a second Philips DVP-642 to replace this unit, but I just have this curious problem with an el-cheapo standalone player.

The model in question is a Kawasaki SVP500. I do note that it's listed in the database here at Vidhelp, but there's not much info about it. I think I picked it up at Target Christmas 2003 for about $70. We just got it for the 5-disc changing because the kids are constantly changing out DVDs, so we figured they'd handle discs less this way.

Anyway, here recently it has stopped playing all DVDs except for home-burned DVDs (-R/-RW/+R/+RW). Wierd. Only thing I can figure is that there's some kind of problem with region coding. Since all home-burned discs are obviously region-free (aka region 0), perhaps there was some kind of internal screwup and now it will only recognize the region 0 discs and not region 1 discs anymore.

Just wondering if anyone's ever heard of a similar problem. Don't have much hope of fixing it as I can't find any info whatsoever about it on the 'Net. Kawasaki's website is all about jetskis and motorcyles :P
