Ok kinda long story but ill try to keep it short.
First, i buy a plextor 716a about 2 months ago works fine but then it won't read or write any cd/dvd what so ever just up and quite. so i rma it.
Then about 3 days later i turn off my computer put in an old dvd rom drive with computer off but still plugged in(i know bad idea but very conveneont seems like im in my case every other day)
so i turn it back on and then i smell something burning im like o F***in SH*T
so i glance at the monitor real quick and i see all these funny colors like green and stuff during bios startup so then i turn it off quick.
I open up the case and look at the dvd rom thinkin that had to be the prob but it didn't smell like it was buring. i sniff around and i smell something burning by the proceccor and power supply and also by the video card area...but that should not be taken as they WERE just that i THOUGHT it smelled up there(with all the fans it could have spread up there and smoke rises)
so i pull my video card spray with compressed air and look it over i did notice one tiny drop of some kind of liquid about the size of a niddle tip on what looked like its ram ships but that was all. ALSO i couldn't get the power cable to come off of it for w/e reason and i didn't want to force it.
So then i put it back together because everything looked fine from what i could tell turn on the computer couple hours later and at bios first screen is ok the second screen has weird letters here and there and changing...but no weird colors this time. windows looks fine as well and no burning smell either.
BUT then i try to run a game and i have all these video defects very hard to discribe as an example i can now see threw some doors and ...ill post a pic maybe later.
then i run my tv program and i get tv but i get green bars and defects n stuff and audio spikes here and there
HERE is the really weird thing i can still watch DVD's to Perfection!!!!!!! Video audio and everything is all PERFECT
Here's my questions
1. why the video defects(my video card? ram?proccecor?) I know its not my monitor and drivers updated today
2. what cause my dvd burner and my im guessing video card to go bad? they went out too close together for me to say cowenidence
could a bad power supply have caused it???
here's my computer spec's
winxp sp1
2100+ amd xp with themtec heatsink and tonado fan
asus an8x somethin motherbord
cosair extrem leg platnum 512 mb ram
ati 9800 pro aiw
audigy zs 2
antec power supply i think its a 350
my case has like half dozon fans

ok this next pic is to show what my tv screen looks like, i tried to take a screen shot but it only shows half of what i actually see, first u have them little dots everywhere that are show inside the ati boxs.
then i also have half of my screen covered in green but its transparent. tv is watchable but sucks very badly.

ok heres a pic of a game now just imagine this about 5x worse and thats what its like playing among other defects also does ripping ruin drives really quickly? or same as watchin a movie?

My best guess is a blown video card. It sounds like the PS is OK. Have you went into BIOS to check voltages? Or ran a program like Motherboard monitor to check the power supply voltages?
I'm not sure why changing out the DVD drive would start this all, but weird stuff happens. Double check that all cables are plugged in properly and not touching anything with their ends.
I once shorted out a molex connector going to a DVD drive while the computer was on and blew the PS, the MB, the processor, DVD drive, floppy, CD drive, video card all in one shot. Really dumb. The HD and the memory survived. Not unplugging your computer when changing components is a bad idea, but it should not cause any physical damage to the machine.
Anyway, check the PS outputs. If the DVD drive shorted out something, make sure the PS is OK. Maybe the video card just decided to die on it's own and it was a coincidence that it happened when you changed the DVD drive.
At this point, I would replace the video card and keep my fingers crossed. -
Honestly, it does look like a blown video card. I too would suggest replacing the card and then go from there. Hopefully it's just your video card.
