A lot of people swear by DVD Decrypter for burning.

I use Nero 6.0 because it allows me to burn two discs at a time. As a precaution, I always boot my computer in a "Minimal" profile I have created. This ensures there will be fewer applications in "start-up," and results in better burns. (Low PI/PO.) I rarely have any coasters.

  12. DVD Decrypter

I've burned about 10 DL discs and all came out perfect, no problems with layer switch which Nero has been known to have in the past.

I just want to add something here: Nero seems to be great. Most DVD Architect users who want to author their DL DVDs use Nero for burning since DVDA does not burn DL (not yet - it seems next verion 3.0 that is about to be released does). They are very satisfied with the excellent results (Sony's forum), even though you may be aware of, there seems to be a compatibility problem with DL media and many DVD players.

Yes, and it's probably the best application currently for DL burning. DVDDecrypter is only good for ISO Read/Write. It's worthless for VIDEO_TS folder recording. But with RecordNow 7.3 you can also record VIDEO_TS folder and have 100% DVD-Video (DVD9) structure compatibility.

If you haven't yet, check this thread (all the positive things said about RecordNow 7.2, also apply to version 7.3):

You can use DVD Shrink to turn a VIDEO_TS folder into an ISO for Decrypter (just select No Compression).

Yes, but that way you still have no control over layer break. I'm sure the non-seamless play flag (in IFO) that is in perfect synchronization with actual layer break will not be inserted by DVD Shrink. If so, a lot of players will permanently freeze at the layer change point.

Latest RecordNow does it on the fly, according to how many files you have and how much space you have left. It does everything possible to give you 100% compliant DVD9. If you already have non-seamless play flag in IFO ("L.Br." in IFOEdit terms), RecordNow will try to have the physical layer break at that exact point. If it's not possible because of extra DVD-ROM files, etc., it will insert its own "L.Br." at the appropriate spot. So again, RN will automatically do everything possible to achieve maximum DL compatibility.

I don't think DVDShrink->DVDDecrypter option will do that for you. It might play through layer change on your player, but "L.Br." flag in IFO file is mandatory at the layer break point in order to be 100% compatible with DVD-Video specifications. At least I need it for two of my older Pioneer DVD players (DV-535 and DV-533).

RecordNow Max 7.2 works well for me. DVD Decrypter also works, but only if you do an exact backup from source to destination. Any mods (like removing FBI warnings, , special features etc.) and I wouldn't go with anything but RNM 7.2 or newer version.

  21. If it is any help, I compared Nero 6 with the burner that comes as part of TMPG DVD author and they are both as good as each other.

    if i'm making a copy of a dvd9, then dvd decrypter iso/read & iso/write.

if i'm authoring my own dvd9, i use recordnow max 7.3 to burn the AUDIO_TS & VIDEO_TS folder.

as far as i'm concerned nero is trash for burning anything besides cd-r's, as versions change so does your chances of burning a compatible dvd. i wouldnt even burn a dvd5 i compiled myself with it, i'd rather use imgtool classic to create an iso & burn the iso with dvd decrypter.
