ok i have a 23.976 fram rate movie NTSCfilm. i converted it to mpeg and its not the same quality as my avi witch it should be better. my avi is 1.8 gig thats because i decompressed the audio it was around 650. ok so the mpeg that i got out of it is not as good as the avi. so can some tell me the best program and the best way to convert this avi?? thanks for your time late

it is really unlikely that you'll get the same quality from the mpg as you have with the avi - it just loses some definition by virtue of the conversion. to make a good vcd encode with tmpgenc at the High Quality setting and engage the block softening in the advanced tab to 35, 35. That will make a good vcd. try playing with the sharpen filter - i got some good success with it. The only way to further improve it would be to encode as a SVCD (which may result in noise from the avi if its a divx) or you might try to make a XVCD with a higher bitrate (which is explained on this web site) But, you will be violating the VCD standard and it might not play on some players. the most critical factor i've found is to crank quality settings as high as u can tolerate. High quality is generally thought of as the best quality/time trade off. But you can go to highest if you want, but you'll wait 15 hours+ for the thing to encode. High quality takes about 9.5 hrs on my machine (k6-2 550) - i run it over night and its usually done in the morning.
