Is there someone who own a 2.4ghz and bought a 3.2ghz comp recently. The reason I ask is b/c I had the chance to upgrade to a 3.2ghz but was hesitant to do so. Is the performance that much of a different between the 2? I just want to know b/c if I was given the same chance again I'd know what to do. Thanks.

Depends what you're using it for. If you're doing HDTV file playback, yes. If you're surfing the Internet, no.

Soopafresh is correct. depends on the usage. If you are using internet, general office applications, etc then you wont notice much of a difference.
If you are into gaming, video encoding etc when the upgrade is a definite. -
Sorry to not mention it before. I am a power user and like to open/run many prog at once. I do video editing and use photoshop a lot. I was hoping for some1 who previously own a 2. something ghz that upgrade to a 3 something that does a lot of video converting, editing, etc. to tell me how much of a performance increase they saw. For instance right now it take me about 1.5-2 hours to convert a avi to a vcd and about 3 hours to compile a dvd with tmp dvd author 1.6. Those are the information I want to see. Thanks.

I have no experience of this, but the jump should be considerable. You're gaining 800MHz core speed, and possibly jumping up to a newer core with more cache. Your 2.4GHz P4 might be on a 533MHz FSB, where the newer 3.2GHz is probably an 800MHz FSB (the FSB is the connection between your CPU and the rest of your system).
As Glock suggested, you could try overclocking your existing system. P4s are usually pretty good at overclocking.
I took my Athlon64 XP3500 from 2.2GHz (FSB200 x 11) to 2.42GHz (FSB255 x 9.5), and I noticed the difference in general system responsiveness. -
I think I should 've started with this question b/c this is what I am really after for.
Please tell me how long your comp takes to compile a dvd with TDA 1.6. Around 4gb - max?
Mine takes roughly 2.5-3 hours

from what i've read before 2.4's a fairly good at overclocking. one of the mods has his at low 3's. and that chip as i understand it can go to high 3's on air

see that thread. it will give you info on converting times. then test your system with the template provided then read the thread and look at other peoples results.. it will give you an idea. there are people there with sim setups to you and some with the setup you're looking for. if you are at lets say 10 seconds and you drop to 7 well thats a 30% drop it may not look like much for a short conversion but for a full movie its great -
i just overclocked a 3.2 LGA775 P4 to 3.85--works like a champ, very stable.
