  1. Ready to build a new PC specifically for video editing and VCD/DVD burning. Would like some recommendations on which CPU I should choose (cost is not a major issue)- I'm looking for stability and speed. Pentium4 or Athalon and why you believe it's a better choice, thanks. Great site - think I'll donate.

The best choice is the athlon xp. Side by side i have seen in berson the amd do better in video and all being 500mhz slower (all but flask mpeg, but hey 500mhz slower you would think it would get beat in at least one thing). It is inferior to the p4 in instruction sets but it then surpasses it in the acrhitecture(sp?). check out all the revies you can benchmarks and decide for yoour self. from what i hear microsoft and amd teamed up for the xp line of both and that winxp is designed for the athlonxp or visa versa i dont remimber.

  6. Do a google search and you'll find out everything you need to known. Here's some helpful hints: for both MP3 encoding and DivX encoding AMD beats the P4 (normally XP1800 or XP1900 vs. P4-2000).

Right now the AMP XP 1700+ seems to be the best buy.

  7. Doesn't this question get asked every few days? I don't mean to be rude, but maybe the mods and the long-time posters should start encouraging use of the forum search engine.

Anyway, at this point in time, the Athlon XP offers better performance and better price, so if I were getting a processor today, I would buy an Athlon. Will Pentiums retake the performance crown in the future? I don't know. If the Pentiums do one day outperform AMDs again, then some people will be willing to pay the premium for Intels, while others will stick with the better overall value of the AMDs. Of course, there's the possibility that Intel won't get their act together and will continue to lose the performance war. Right now, the decision is an easy one: AMD.

  8. P4 is much much much more stable in terms of long clip rendering. Athlon's are notoriously known for overheating for any reason whatsoever. Also, P4 uses RAMBUS memory which has the fastest excess rate. If you decide to go with P4 don't go with SDRAM Much slower. Unless you have some you want to save. P4 and athlon are about the same price along with mainboard, so I definitely would go with P4
