just read an article in Playboy stating that set-top players for both formats will be available by late November this year (I'm sure they will be fuckin' PRICEY - I remember when VCR's first hit the 'consumer' market, talk about expensive).........
I think I'll wait quite a while before diving in too deep.
    PlayStation3 will be Bu-Ray, and I definitely plan on getting a PlayStation3.
So at the very least, I will have that as a Blu-Ray player and if after a few years there is still no clear-cut "winner", I will get an HD-DVD player as well.

DVD will be still here for a long time to come. VHS is still here too, though not as popular as DVD.

It will be longer before it hits the UK market as blue ray/HD DVD will be based on High Definition. The UK has not yet adopted the HD age as well as other European countries.

You can still find blank VHS all over the place here in the States, but it's getting almost impossible to find new movies on VHS -- very few stores still carry VHS, and when you can find it, the selection is usually limited to Barney, Teletubbies, and other toddler stuff.
not that I care, now that the 21st century is here, I've decided to step into the 1990's and DVD is the way to go for me.
I agree, it will be several years before DVD is "dead" like BetaMax is now.

It looks as if the two format side may be working on a truce, because they don't want to screw consumers. (Gasp! You mean that they really care!) I think that this is due to the fact that HD-DVD will beat Blu-Ray to market and may be somewhat cheaper.

My bet is that the two side will agree to make the players spin Blu-Ray/HD-DVD/DVD/CD. That way both can keep thier format and consumers can chose which format disc to buy. (And all on one machine)

At least that is what I am hoping for!

  5. What I'm really looking forward to with all this Blu-ray/HD DVD stuff is not so much in the increased disc capacity itself, but in the use of MPEG4. Not that MPG2 is bad, but MPG4 is really a big step forward in efficiency. It will be nice to see MPG4 as a more widely accepted format and having more and more standalone DVD players supporting the format. Players like the Philips 642 are more a novelty than anything right now. It reminds me of the transition from MP2 to MP3 :P

    NOT!!!!
they simply don't want to miss out on an opportunity to get your money.
Sony's BetaMax format was superior to VHS in many ways (just as Blu-Ray is superior to HD-DVD in some ways), but look where that went.

  7. exactly, they don't want to miss our money. and from what I see, HD will win the war, because it's cheaper, and it's enough for Hd tv.

of course, ALL FORMAt will be nice, but, that will be $$$$$$$ :P

we just got over with - and + war, now, soon, we'll have another one....which is better, HD or Blue ray.....

at least there will be no more confusion on how to read the format....

If they both remain, consumers are most likely the buy the movie on the format that is more cheaper.

If a Blue Ray disc costs a few £££/$$$ more than the HD-DVD of the same movie, people will buy HD-DVD.

  13. Blue Ray and HD DVD are already out-dated. I would wait for holographic versatile disc (HVD). It uses 2 laser beams and has up to 1 TByte capacity. See:

Yeah like that's really good. With MPEG4, they are giving consumers LESS of the film. More LOSSY COMPRESSION and less of the original frames. This is why I always hated DVD's and MPEG technology. They don't preserve each individual frame. Laserdisc, although analog and big disc, ruled in this area.

If they start re-releasing movies on Blu-ray/HD-DVD, I sure hope they DON'T use the old DVD MPEG2 "master". They better recapture the film using non-compressed footage and then compress to MPEG4. Otherwise, it is just a waste to make a HD disc, by using old, already compressed footage.

Also this time, I hope studios start RE-MASTERING OLD FILMS. I've bought many DVD's that look like CRAP because the "noise/lines" wasn't taking out of the film. Some of these were brand newly released films, that they just transfered directly to DVD! Defects in the film were not fixed before transfering. They need to start going frame by frame and remaster this stuff, patch up the spots and junk on all the frames.

HDTV is far more than PAL/SECAM/NTSC. So, they have to remaster old films (something not neccessary for DVDs, since you can use the same masters with VHS and look - with some "enchancment" tricks "better"

  18. I personally think that the Computer will take over all entertainment Hardware, or at least become VERY popular. As much as I HATE MS, I think they have the right idea bringing out the Media Center PC. I have been running everything that way for years now & with all the portable units now coming out which are all basically computer file media, this is the future of "Entertainment".

Please don't flame me for this opinion,, but I would love any constructive critisisms. I think that any Movie/DVD/Audio/etc can be made to a media file for play on basically any new PC. It is also fairly standard or at least not subject to "out of date" Hardware as much as Stand alone units.

Right now, you can actually buy High Def movies & play them on your TV (with the proper Hardware) where as there are yet to be released any Hardware let alone Actual Movies for HD-DVD or Blueray.

I have not heard a lot about the way of the computer.... Am I missing something????

    .....Just an opinion.....
