  1. I have a Seagate 120GB in a Bytec Firewire inclosure. For the second time now it has given me an error message that disappears too quickly to write it down. Some thing about $Security being corrupted. Then I can't access the drive. It still lists in My computer but with no size listings in detailed view. It also lists as working fine in device manager. I have to quick format and it works fine again. Thankfully nothing was on it at the moment this time. Any idea what could be causing this? Seems to happen after using the drive extensively for a while.

i had the same situation but my 160 gb seagate is in a ADAPTEC USB 2.0 hard drive enclosure. it would not let me access the drive and said it was corrupted so i had to reformat it. like you i was lucky i didn't have critical information on the hd.

this is the 1st seagate purchase for me which i was hesitant in buying but I used my compusa gift cards and after a $40.00 mail in rebate the drive cost me $25.00. :P i've yet to see this hd impress me yet since i had already had to reformat it.

i don't know why the bigger hard drives seem to lose or have corrupt files then end up having to reformatted.

  3. I'm not so sure its the HDD itself. I've used the same drive as a primary drive in a computer before and never had any such issues. Only seems to happen when its in an enclosure.

    Try this,

    1. Remove the disk from the enclosure
    2. install the disk in a windows PC as a second drive.
    3. If you are using windows run CHKDSK /F/X d:
Note: change the driver letter as needed.

After the disk is fixed un fragment it and put it back into the enclosure.

Remember that you should not remove the disk while the disk is in use.

  5. I'll give that a go next time it happens. I was thinking of removing my Zip drive and moving the HDD inside the tower anyway. When this has happened I can't get Check Disk to run on the firewire drive at all. I wonder if a full format would help anything? When I first got it I used Seagates disc wizard to format it, which is basically a quick format since it took less than a minutes, same time as windows quick format option. I've never done a full format on it though. This seems to happen when I go to safely remove hardware to remove it. Not sure what the problem is, though I did notice files I deleted off of it right before going to remove it never went to the recycle bin but deleted directly instead.

  6. Thanks for the links. I'll take a close look at them when I get some free time. I glanced at them briefly and unfortunately my enclosure uses a Prolific chipset, which wasn't mentioned and probably doesn't have an update.

  8. Could well be. I heard a lot of people liked the prolific chipset just fine but who knows. Its not as mainstream as the oxford.

  12. Just ran the test tool. No errors detected. Probably not 100% certain but it's nice to know it appears to be working correctly.
