  4. crazy_celica95, as the two nice gentleman mentioned, you must install an ASPI layer for Windows XP (which i'll never understand why it doesn't have it considering it has Adaptec build into it!) and only then you will be able to play and copy DVD's correctly.

If the link doesn't work for you, feel free to email me, and i'll send it over to you.

I hate to argue, but you're incorrect. I have XP, and absolutely NO problems watching DVD's, nor ripping. This is not an upgrade to XP, but a fresh install from the disk.

Did you install a standalone player? Like WinDVD or PowerDVD? Should be set for DVD playing.

For ripping, if you're worried, use the latest Smartripper (2.40 I think). It has a setting which can use its own ASPI or "Win_IO"... as a matter of fact, I'm ripping one of my DVD's right now, in the background. WinXP Pro edition.

Did I miss something here, folks? ASPI WHAT?!?

  6. homerpez, what exactly is your ripping performance without an ASPI Layer ? do you know the ASPI Layer is required for the proper communication of Windows with the CD/DVD devices in your system ? if it isn't there, Windows is emulating it, and we all know emulation is much slower then the real thing.

Which is why Smart Ripper is capable of ripping without ASPI, it is because it provides it's own communication protocol, why don't you try ripping with a program that doesn't provide it ?

    Sefy,

I too did not add another aspi layer in it on my Win XP. Ripping performance went from 1x -> 7.5x speed. The only thing I've had to is start up the dvd with Power DVD 4xp, and then stop it, then start up Smart Ripper v 240.

    Hope all's good Bro

Sefy, My ripping performance is what it has always been: awful!

I have a 6x drive, one of the oldest made. My ripping speed always is between 1.3 and 1.5x (when you apply all the NECESSARY Macrovision removal, and decoding). It was this same speed using any ripper, Windows 98, 2000 and now, XP.

I've tried simply ripping the .vob's (which is useless, since they're not descrambled)... the speed goes almost all the way up to like 4.5x-5x speed. Decoding is what slows mine down, not "lack" of an ASPI driver.

Does it harm me any to install one? Or would it mess things up?

  9. Hmm strange, do you have DMA checked in for your DVD drive and hard disks?
BTW, for all of you Intel chipset users out there, I strongly recommend downloading and installing Intel Application Accelarator, which makes DMA transfers much much smoother (it s on the Intel website).
My 16X typically rips at up to 12 meg per second, i.e. 10/12 typically (depends on the disks though, some do not lend themselves to it). It is also a function of your CPU.

  10. <Spidey>, have you tried using a ripper other then Smart Ripper ? cause i'm well aware SR supports ripping without ASPI Layer.

homerpez, my ripping speed is typicly 5x to 7x using all the features of Smart Ripper, CPU does help, but more in decoding then the actually copying of the files.

Sefy, you're saying this should improve performance that much? I'm sold!

...wait... I just ran the aspichk prog... I HAVE ASPI ALREADY! When did that happen?

I suspect one of the DVD software players installs it if it isn't there already, since I never installed it on purpose!
