  1. I'm completely new to conversions etc, and I was wondering if it's worth converting my downloaded XVID file (350Mb) to DVD, or whether VCD will result in the same quality?

    Many thanks for any help!

    What is the runtime ?

I have done 700+ MB Xvids to DVD and had great success. They are not DVD quality, but certainly as good as the original Xvid (and in some cases better), and far better than VHS.

If the runtime is around the hour mark in 350mb, you could go to DVD. If it is 90+ minutes in that file size, go VCD.

  3. Hi. Thanks for the quick reply!

The runtime is 45 mins for 350Mb, so it sounds like DVD is the way to go?

Also, the resolution of the original is showing 624 x 352 in VirtualDub, so I guess a VCD will be automatically lower quality?

Go with DVD unless the picture is really blurry.

DVD is the way to go....use 704 X 480 and encode at 16:9.....use a bitrate of 3500 to 4000 for 2 pass (around 5000 for CBR..single pass) and the the result will be the just as good as the avi (possibly better due to the larger vertical)....use LANCZOS as the resize filter...any higher bitrate is just a waste..find another project to stick on the same DVDr so you aint wasting disks.

Never go vcd if you have good quality clips,go with 352x480/576 for longer clips that run over 2 hours.Dvd is fine for what you have.
