I found this refreshing that someone agrees with me.

    Other OSs under attack
The Symantec report also predicts that crackers will become more interested in Macs during 2005, specifically mentioning sales of low-priced mini Macs. As more casual, less tech-savvy users adopt Macs, expect to hear more about vulnerabilities exposed within the Mac OS, which is based on the Unix system. Other security companies are seeing an uptick in Mac flaws. For example, security company Secunia also saw an increase in reported Mac OS flaws during 2004.

As you adopt new technology, stop and think about the possible security pros and cons. Just because someone hasn't written a devastating worm to hit the Mac OS platform doesn't mean it won't happen.

Yeah I trust the Virus and Security software company to tell me "Thing ARE GONNA GET BAD!!!! BUYZ SOFTWARE DOODZ!!!!!111one!!"

On that note yeah makes have been helped somewhat by their smaller numbers, and it will continue to help them even in the higher number enviroment. But the mac OS is petty secure overall. Software doesn't not get installed on my box because I clicked one wrong button while surfing the web.

Okay, so you have a maker of Anti-Virus software telling people that tons of viruses are on the way.....somehow I'm not convinced.

Well I think he is mainly just overestimating the growth of Mac usage, but generally I agree with those statements.

I think it stands to reason that a large part of Mac's relative security lies in its relative obscurity. As they become more popular they will become larger targets. Since Apple and Mac operating systems really have not had their products tested in the face of major security attacks, ala windows, its reasonable to think that they'd have a very tough road ahead of them if their market share suddenly, doubled let's say.

Apple and Mac are on the move after a number of years of relative stagnancy. Ipod and Itunes are insanely popular and if Apple plays their cards right alot of this interest will transition over to their computers. We are already seeing alot of marketing toward getting a computer to interface with all of your music and video peripherals (see a Best Buy or Circuit City ad lately? They measure a hard drive's capacity by how many mp3's it can hold.) The Mini Mac is obviously an attempt to capitalize on this. Now there is a Mac that is very affordable and I think that there will definitely be more people who will buy into the Mac alternative.

But like I said, I think he is grossly overestimating the extend of this shift.

Macs don't need virus. They stop working and crash without any extra code. It's already built into X.

I say this coming away from a machine that refuses to work on X. Loved it on OS9. Total crap on X. Not anti-Mac, just anti-X.

    Oh yeah, see this:

I think the biggest factor in more Mac virsues will be the Mac Mini. More inexperienced users, more Macs overall, not to mention that any geek who WANTS to write Mac viruses can actually BUY a Mac to screw around with. Don't confuse OBSCURE with SECURE.

EDIT: Must have been subconcious as I skimmed your post.
Nothing can stop me now, 'cause I don't care anymore.

BTW the estimate of 5% market share by the end of '05 came from Forbes.

Very true. Script kiddies will migrate to wherever the action is ... and antivirus companies will follow them to pick up the pieces. The only safe way to avoid stuff like that is to write your own OS and the software for it ... and (grin) remember not to share it with anyone.

Oh it works, its just its advertised features isn't what its doing. They wouldn't sell much software if it says:

It MIGHT do all of the following!*
    fix your crap
    fix more crap
    fix all your crap
keep you from making stupid decisions
    and more!

*or crash your entire computer leaving you in a state of tears
