  1. Iv used White surface inkjet media and wondering what I should expect with silver. I only asked because I sold one of my cd inkjet printers and got a thermal printer. Iv been printing on white media up until today. What a difference printing on a shiny silver thermal disc make. Will the inkjet silver have any type of sheen or will it be just like the white surface.

  2. Well since there is no white ink, any images that use white will have silver instead where white should be. Will look holographic.

  3. Silver printables seem to have a far softer image. And really do look holographic. Not sure if i like them or not.

  4. TY, I actually havent installed the ribbon that has the white color on it. I just wanted to compare an inkjet silver disc to a thermal. I have an Everest II and the R200. I never did get around to buying any silver inkjet printables. But I can tell you printing on an Everest using silver disc is unbelievable as well as white disc. I cant wait to install the CMYW ribbon.

  5. I've never tried other silver inkjet printables besides TY. The TY silver is matte instead of shiny, so the effect will look very different from printing on a shiny thermal-printables. My test print with the TY was a somewhat abstract photo image with vivid colors -- so even though it did have a holographic effect, it wasn't unpleasant -- but it will never look like the original label.

Wow, you have an Everest II, hugabone? Is it worth the investment?

Yes, Its worth the investment. All the worries I had using the R200 I dont have with the Everest. I havent bought the CIS for the R200, still using the OEM ink but it can be expensive for it. I will try the aftermarket ink. I can get the Rimage Dvd media kit for about $400 which includes 500 TY disc, color ribbon and the transfer ribbon.Thats about 40 cents for each printable disc. I still havent used the CMYW ribbon which is where it really suppose to shine. The only downfall using this printer is setting it up. Iv gone through many of disc trying to get the colors right.

Silver TYs look great with graphics, not so great with photos. The photos on Silver TYs ARE holographic looking, but slightly blurry. If you have graphics that have silver or gold running through the pic it's pretty impressive. For photos, white printable Riteks do a great job ... but then again, I find errors on about 10% .... but photo printing on them does stand out! The printing on the white TYs seems a little dull to me. Not as sharp as a Ritek.

Unless I'm wrong, there's also the issue of all thermal-printable discs not being hub-printable... And more and more original labels are printed into the hubs now.

Well Everest media is very limited. Only a few manufactures make media for it, Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim and Mitsui to name a few and they all make hub printable disc. Not just that, I can make a full print right to the hole, right over the clear plastic. This is one of the images Rimage sent me that I printed.

Looks very nice, but probably a little pricey for the casual home user.

As soon as my TY silver hub printables run out, I'm going back to white. I don't like them nearly as well as white. They just aren't as bright. The only time I like them is when printing something in which I just have some text (i.e. data disc) and the silver background looks more polished and appealing than a standard white background. I don't think silver looks bad, I just don't think it looks as good if you are making dvd labels where you have photos included. Just my 2 cents...

And not every major online media retailers carry thermal hub-printable either... A casual research came up with Meritline having white thermal hub-printable discs; the silver thermal (non-hub) printables carried by Rima actually state that they're not for Rimage Everest.

  14. Thanks for the response. Most resalers carry hub printable Everest CDR silver disc. The only DVDR that I could find in silver for the Everest is made by Mitsui. And they are expensive.
