reading japanese in VHS player buttons

Hi,

I bought an old VHS player to convert my old VHS tapes into DVD. I can generally use it for playing the tapes. But I'd like to learn what the other buttons on the remote, player, menu are for.

Does anyone know an easy way for me to find out? can anyone give me a website to at least see some common characters and its translation?

The player is a JVC/Victor HR-200

You're going to have a hell of a time with this. If you have some kind of document you can cut and paste out of, you can try babelfish like Lordsmurf said. I think my Toshiba VCR remote was in hirogana. You can also try to use the print screen function and try to find someone to translate them from pictures. Some words just don't translate well either. I'm having someone come over and try to read my manual to me for my VX-200.

Your player might have the option to change the menus over to English, but at this point it would be trial and error. That would solve part of your problem. A solution to the remote is to try a universal remote.

Have you tried JCV's website to see if there is a manual for your model, or one close to it, that is in English?

Already tried to look for online manuals, but to no avail.

I'm a bit afraid to set the menus into english by trial and error. I might do something I'm not supposed to.

I also tried babelfish before, but I'll try again and see what comes up.
