Dvd-rom upgrade for my apex?

I have an Apex 500w with an upgraded eprom. It still has trouble sometimes reading dvd-r's. I think that the orginal dvd rom's in these players are pretty cheap so I want to upgrade to a PC ide dvd rom which would give me better read quality and probably fix my -r problems. Wondering if anybody knows what brand and read speed would be the best for my upgrade?
