PAL DVD's playing in North America?....slim chance.
NTSC DVD's playing in Europe?...GOOD Chance.
Buying a different DVD player...one capable of converting PAL to NTSC "on the fly" is a much better option than converting with a computer.
A cheap Apex is probably your best bet. Just look for an N/P button on the remote control...or take your PAL DVD with you to the store when you purchase the player....that way you will know for sure.

    Hi dvdman24,
I just bought a new dvd player Phillips dvp-642 two days ago because I
wanted to be able to play my region 2 Pal formated dvd movies.
My tv is an ntsc and it is NOT multi formatted.
This dvd player worked brilliantly. It played the disc with no problem at all.If you check out this website you will find info.about this player.
    It is dirt cheap,$ 89.00 cdn.at walmart.
All you heve to do is use a code to implement the dvd player so it will
play your region 2 Pal formatted discs.
Here are the steps to follow :
    1) open dvd player tray
    2) on the remote press 7,8,9,ok ,0 ( the zero makes the player region free)
    3) a 0 will appear on the bottom left hand side of your tv screen
    4) sit back and enjoy playing your r2 pal movies.
    all the best

Lots of newer DVD players will do PAL->NTSC pseudo pulldown so that you can watch your PAL DVD's. Even the cheap ones - well, actually ESPECIALLY the cheap ones, for whatever reason. I bought a Cyberhome for $27.50 for the sole purpose of watching PAL discs, my friend bought a pretty nice JVC for $75 that plays PAL just fine.

But no you can't COUNT on it. Many VERY NICE players just will not do PAL, nothing Sony makes will play PAL unless you're in Europe.

  5. Anyone know if the Pioneer 220-s recorder can play PAL format? The one time I tried, the display said it was playing but there was nothing coming on the screen. Are recorders alot more picky when it comes to region type?

Oh, many players will PLAY the PAL disc, but not OUTPUT it properly. Pioneers are among those - you'll get either NO picture, or a rolling black & white picture.

    Sorry.

the pioneer dvr-220s will play pal dvd's, but it wont convert on the fly to ntsc.. however, it will play pal s/vcd's and convert on the fly to ntsc.. i'm kind of dissapointed about this.. seeing as how their most recent dvd players had this capability.

the pioneer dv-260 & dv-270 will play pal dvd's & s/vcd's and convert on the fly to ntsc.

  8. I use the PAL / NTSC DVD Conversion (patch method) and it has worked for me about 90 percent of the time.

Clarification: It has worked for you on YOUR DVD PLAYER 90% of the time.

The general success rate for the total DVD player population is more like 50%.

The success rate for Pioneer? Zero.

    gurm,

i like the cut of your jib.. but you gotta get your facts straight, there are some pioneer dvd players that perfrom on-the-fly conversion from pal to ntsc for dvd's.. i havent ran in to a pioneer dvd player that wouldnt perform an on-the-fly conversion for s/vcd's.

  11. I actually have 2 Pioneers that it worked on in past.

I have tried maybe 13 or so diffrent dvd players that the patch worked on. Sometimes it is the TV itself that can't handle the picture, not the DVD player

  12. if you're in the states, get a dirty cheap cyberhome 300 and crack it.
if you live in europe, MOST of the europeans can play ntsc fine, and tv's can play ntsc also.

to much work to convert it.

Any of the five or so I've played with. Anything older than... err... last year? My 525 won't, the 535 won't, in fact the entire 5xx series. Their multi-disc progressive player won't, either.

My now old PIONEER DV-606D is multiregion and PAL/NTSC capable but is a "hacked" USA model that does no conversion. NTSC goes out NTSC and PAL goes out PAL. This pre-modified version cost me $725 back when the standard region 1 USA version was around $550 or so. I think this was a 3rd generation DVD player by PIONEER.

It plays DVD-R just fine (if authored and burned "well") but it will not do SVCD at all and will only do VCD and music CD-R if you use an exceptional brand like Taiyo Yuden and even then it can be picky.

Of course this is nitpicking :P

Probably the best multiregion PAL to NTSC DVD players on the market these days are made by JVC but you have to buy them pre-modified to be multiregion.

http://www.220-electronics.com/ is a website that usually has really good prices on the JVC models.

They even have a multiregion PIONEER that does PAL to NTSC

Funny, my friend's JVC was fine with a quick menu hack. *shrug*

I am not aware of a simple "menu" hack for any of the JVC models ... at least not USA models.

This is historically speaking mind you ... maybe some newer model out there is easy to hack?

But like I said that sure hasn't been the case in the past.

  17. The one thing I doknow about is this subject !

Daytek dp30 is a dvd recorder that has the most amazing menu hack I have ever seen and it will play either pal/ntsc and record in either.

If all you wanna do is play pal dvd's on a ntsc TV, get a philips 642 and use the menu hack to rid the player od region preference or the daytek models.

There are so many options available why anyone would want to 'convert" and all its failures is beyond me, and has been said many times, europe has nearly all of its dvd players region free and pal/ntsc playable.

There is even a jvc dvd recorder for twice the price of the daytek which will play pal on a ntsc TV, and the region coding can be overcome by using dvd decrypter to burn a region free copy.
