If you own BenQ 1620s, go DL MCSE and patch your drive for awesome ripping speeds...I just ripped a pressed DL disc (6.2 GB) in 7 minutes!

Not to rain on your party MaJie but I get those speeds from my Toshiba 1612 dvdroms which have Hijackers no speed limit firmware hack. For others who don't have a dvdrom but only have the Benq 1620 drive then it would be worth the download.

It's a piece of s$%t in my opinion. I got DW822A "flash to latest" firmware. My brother got the 1620pro for cheap (he is regreting it now) and flesh the latest firmware(B7U9). Only good with Benq media. Extremely picky on media. Try stick a Sony -RW media....

I have two BrnQ1620s, and they are excellent.

I've never used BenQ media, and I've *never* had a coaster (I only use MXL RG03).

If your bro has problems with his, it may be bad media or user error.

It's not picky with media but it's not working well with 1x-2x DVD-RW, but why use such slow media when 4x DVD±RW are available and working?

"Ripping speed" is not a criteria for a burner to most people, which appears to be one of it's only useful things. BTC is better at quality of reading, just not as fast.

The other is "media scanning" which is not much use aside from the dorks that infest the web at places like cdfreaks. Normal people have no such use for it. And there are other drives that can test. It's a shame this post didn't get more votes, but that kind of percentage is actually pretty accurate maybe even on the high side to be honest). Testing? Most people could care less, and for good reason: it's not wholly scientific, more of an art.

It's actually a quite poor reader, especially on -RW media.

Stock firmware, software support and media support is also not the greatest.

That's my review: BIG STINK-O.

What do you mean poor stock FW? I SEE a lot more hacked Pio's and NECs...so you are just flat wrong there. I have burned 100+ discs w/ "stock" firmware -- G7P9, B7T9, and B7U9 -- without a coaster.

What do you mean poor media saupport? Do you want me to extract the media code list from every BenQ and show you what media it supports?

And you basis this on????????????????? You don't even own the damn drive so why not stop bashing it. Or are you envious of others who have the BENQ 1620?????? Let me say this the BENQ 1620 is a good reader compared to my PIONEER 107 when it comes to discs that are not readable. Secondly who gives a flying hell about DVD-RW when the speed is so damn low. Correct me if I am wrong but in one of your posts long ago you bashed the DVD-RW media. Be careful of what you post because some day it comes back to bite you in the ass. In japanese we call this BACHI meaning watch what you say or do because someday it will come back at you.

As for support BENQ has had more official firmware support compared to PIONEER's 109 drive. Only thing you're correct about is quality scans. Bottom line is if the damn dvd burns and plays back fine that is all that matters. nuff said!

So what ?? i have burned literally 1000's of dvd's with stock firmware on a lite-on... with 0 coasters!!!!!!!! and i am talking 50 to 100 disc's a week!!!

I have an NEC ND-3520A that has burned disc's others have said to be crap and that the NEC was the reason for....... bought one.... burn's them perfectly!!!!!!!!! and that was before setting it to burn +R at DVD-ROM booktype (which we all know is better) :P

And as far as your BenQ ripping speed's... well, i would rather have a drive like my Toshiba SD-M1712 that rips at speeds you stated earlier and it also reads DVD-RAM & save my burner for just that... burning... don't even waste time using any of my burners (present or past for ripping) and for $15.00, i could buy them all day long, although i don't need to as my toshiba has lasted for 2 years now being a heavy ripping drive

Most people could care less? Your own link says otherwise, and this is coming from videohelp, not cdfreaks' users. 21 of the 30 people that voted said that they like seeing them, whether they fully accept their results or not. I myself voted 'take them with a grain of salt' as I'm fully aware that they have their limits and aren't ALWAYS an accurate gauge, but at the same time I've often posted my own PI/PO tests on here as they do have their place and the info they provide is typically very much in line with the quality of the burns.

I'm not suggesting to buy a drive just because it does or doesn't have PI/PO testing abilities, but it certainly has it's place and is a very useful tool to have available.

budz, I still think DVD-RW sucks. But it's a necessary evil of DVD recorders. Buy TDK or MKM and hope all goes well. DVD recorders seem to work better with -RW media than computer burners (go figure) and players still hate them. So all is well. Nothing has changed here.

With that being said, Id still rather have a Plextor 716. I rips the fastest of all the burners right out of the box. Not to mention its burning quality.
