  1. Hello, I've just recently started an endeavor to convert our VHS home movies (ranging in age from 1 to 25 years old) to DVD. I purchased the following capture card: KWORLD DVD Maker Card, Model "Xpert DVD MAKER PCI (VS-L883d)" -RETAIL

The card included a copy of Power Producer 2 Gold, which is what I am using for authoring. However the program crashes everytime I try to capture using it, and the only other program that works with this capture card is Virtual VCR.

I have done a capture of a 1 year old 2-hour VHS tape using the Huffy codec, which resulted in a file about 17.7 GB in size. The quality of the capture is great, at least to my eyes. However, when I use PP2 to convert and burn the DVD, the final product is plagued with what I can only describe as a "pulsating splotchyness" that didn't exist in the 17.7 GB file. Certain areas of the screen have pixilated splotches that seem to go on and off every 2 seconds or so and makes the movies unwatchable. The only positive aspect of the final product is that the audio and video are fully in sync.

I've read through various articles posted on this website, but I'm stumped on why this is happening or what I can do about it. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Try encoding with a better encoder. Tmpgenc (slow, but very good quality) or CCE Basic (fast, also very good quality) are two reasonably priced options. Make sure you correctly calculate the bitrate required, to make sure you get the best use of space. The splotching is usually a sign of not enough bitrate, and possibly an inferior encoder. What size are the output files for the finished DVD ?
