looking at a hdd on newegg under the refurb section. am i wrong in thinking they carry the full manufacture warranty? or am i smokin the good stuff?

    ******UPDATE******

so i decided to email 3 of the major company's that make hdd's. so far i have gotten a response back from 2.

SEAGATE: it seems like they will back their product no matter what. you really have to respect that. im sorry, but im about to become nothing but a seagate for life person. im still waiting on response from samsung. which i belive their product is up there but their support isn't.....

HITACHI: seems with them it's more of a hit or miss type of deal

btw seagate was the first to respond

The refurbished drives from New-Egg probably do not have any warranty thru
Hitachi. Without the serial numbers of the drives, we can tell you the
exact warranty, but most likely they were sold as is without any warranty.
If you can provide us with a serial number from one of the drives we would
be able to give you more information.

If I can be of further assistance, please let me know.

  2. Usually there are shortened warranties (like 90 days, for example) on refurbs...

The only drive I've ever had that died without warning was a "refurbed" Seagate.
"One HD I had, a head detached and gouged the ufck of one side of one platter. It was stalled after 15 seconds. ABSOLUTELY NO WARNING!"
It was out of its 90 day warranty.

Technically the original manufaturer warranty should still be in effect if it was registered. All the refurb Seagate SCSI drives I buy on eBay still have active warranties.

that's why i was kinda confused. some of their refurb's say manufactures warranty only does this apply to everything or just what they list? i always thought refurbs came with original warrantys, otherwise nobody would really buy them

What is the warranty for refurbished merchandise? Do refurbished items offer any additional warranty coverage?

Refurbished items come with a 15 day warranty from the date of the invoice only. No exceptions. The manufacturer may or may not extend to you any other warranty. This is beyond our control.
found it. thats kinda gray if you ask me

It makes sense though. The warranty they're referring to is probably returns through the retailer, not the RMA through the manufacturer.

My personal experience has been that the refurbed ones are so unreliable I would not want one.

Interesting that Seagate claims to back their stuff so well. I've been looking at a new drive for my G5 and checked what was in there. It was a seagate and I was like "well this one works great so I'll get another of these"

they were the first one's to email me back. im really only buying seagates from now on. i dont care if another company has a drive for a little cheaper. i'll pay for the customer service and warranty.

my roomy brought home a retired server the other day from his work. it has 2 drive. one seagate and the other ibm. the ibm is clunking out and the seagate is working perfect. it's been running a raid 1 for over 5 years.
