I've been thinking of getting a Pioneer 520 model because of the HDD. I would like to know if this makes it simply region free or if there is more ... i.e., will it play a PAL DVD out as NTSC?

  7. So I put the disc in, and it spins up, and says it cannot play this kind of disc, but shows me 19 or so minutes, and a regular counter comes up and plays a black screen.

  8. I'm willing to Lab Rat this machine aslong as i dont have to open it, if anyone has any ideas. Im going to brun the .nrg again on a different burner, as the disc wont show up on my laptop.

  9. Maybe burn the image on a DVD+RW, bitset as a DVD-ROM disc? When I opened the image in ISObuster it just shows a single 'track'...

Who knows what this thing is, vikeq has been registered for about 9 months and this is his/her first post. Odd.

  10. Would I do this in NERO? It comes up as a CDImage in there. I have plenty of DVDrs to test on.

thank link said something about there being instructions, but i have not seen any.

  14. Well, I even reset the factory settings with the disc in the drive, and no dice, so I guess us 220 peeps are not ment to be region free. Good thing the patch mehod works on this drive.

  15. hmm, sounds legit if you can get the 'instructions' on it. Patch method, what's that?

Oh well, I don't actually have any need for Region free. Never had a disc I couldn't play, and I've got another player that could handle it anyway. I was hoping it might contain other features as well.

  16. I too was hoping I could backup my VHS tapes.

The patch method is where you edit the IFO file to NTSC rather than PAL to fool the DVD player into playing your backups that are PAL

Yeah, if it had macrovision bypass like some of the Liteons we'd be set :P

Interesting about the patching, does it play back PAL discs properly then? Any more specific instructions you can link to on exactly how you edit the IFO file? Thanks

I found a website that sells the region free disc for the pioneer 220-S. I don't know the cost of it because it's in the UK. Here is the link for that website.

  19. Hi Budz - the site has 54.99 pounds listed for the price, which is around $100 (!) U.S. Here in the U.S. that can get you 2 or 3 region free PLAYERS, let alone a hack for one... What ripoff artists :P

It also says it has no benefit with Macrovision

  23. I posted this over in the Hacks listing for this player and thought I'd post here too. We just got a 520 and I'd love to make it region-free, but at this point I'm stumped as to what to do with this odd torrent collection of RAR files.

    -------------------------------
I downloaded the Torrent file above and what I got was 36 compressed RAR diles, each of which contains a 127 meg Nero NRG disc image file. What on earth does one do with this? They're all the same name, and decompressing all the files results in more size than will fit on a DVDRW. Do they need to be combined somehow? Used separately? This is just for general info - there are no instructions given and no clue what the file is or how to assemble and use it, so at this point this doesn't seem to be a working hack.

i dont know if it would really be of any benefit to ntsc users to do this region free upgrade, unless you're watching out-of-regon ntsc dvd's.

my 220s will play regionfree PAL dvd's, but i get a rolling black & white screen.. i'm assuming the same is true for the 520..
