  1. My fiancee bought a Toshiba DVD Recorder with TiVo (RS-TX60). She wants to record onto the hard drive a continuous program (freakin' fashion shows ) running on a cable channel for the next few days, but is only interested in recording certain 6- to 8-minute portions onto a DVD. (The program is a series of separate shows, but she is only interested in certain shows.)

From a quick read of the directions it appears that this DVD recorder can only record whole "programs" off the hard drive to the DVD which have been previously saved.

    3 questions:

    1. Does anyone know whether it's possible to record separate segments of a "program" from a hard drive onto a DVD-R or DVD-RW in real time using this unit?

    2. Is this capability present in ANY DVD recorder out there - namely, to record 1 long program & transfer from hard drive to DVD certain segments within the program in real time?

    3. If not, would a logical workaround be to connect a VCR (or another DVD recorder) to the out jack of this Toshiba/TiVo recorder, hook the "out" of the VCR/2d DVD recorder to the TV & try to record the Toshiba/TiVo's hard drive to the VCR/2d DVD?

Any help would be appreciated; she's driving me crazy & I don't want to sit there watching fashion shows. Thanks.

  2. I've got this very unit and have been displeased with its limitations. The quick answer to your first question is no.

As to the second question, I don't know but I think you can do it with the Pioneer 520, it has great editing capabilities. I think you would have to edit the program on the hard drive and then burn the edited save.

On your third question, that seems possible but you may want to try some other approaches if you don't have a second dvd recorder. You could burn the entire fashion show to dvd-rw and then edit with Tmpgenc Dvd Author which is simple to use and then burn the edited program back to dvd-r with your computer. Another work around you may try would be to try to use a camcorder to do basically what you mentioned in your post. You could fast forward to the clips she wanted an just record those segments to the camcorder and then shoot them back to the Toshiba's HD.

I know these aren't the answers your looking for but I hope they help.

You can do this on both the Pioneer 520 and the Panasonic E85.

  4. Thank you both for your replies. Actually I am looking at the Pioneer as a hard-drive alternative. I wish I would have moved on the 420 bargain at CostCo, but I was not fast enough.
