I been playing around with my new PSP, trying to find an easy way to get videos to play on it and I came across the following freeware for the PC:

    http://www.pspvideo9.com/

I have tried an mpg1, mpg2 and a Divx, so far they have all worked ok. I have had to compress the full movie DivX alot to get a full movie on a 256 MB card. Got it to 176 MB but it was way too blocky so I guess I need a larger card for the full movies

The 1 hour mpg2 and the 30 min. mpg1 both came out pretty good. I will have to get to know this program better to optimize the quality.

This program was easy to use and set up, the quality appears good to me at least. Plus it is freeware with donations requested.

I would like to hear other people's methods of converting to PSP including experiences with this program

  2. When you are watching a movie, how long is the battery life? Is it even worth it to try and watch, say, a full-length movie?

More important (i think), how long does it take to recompress a movie to this format (it's mp4 right?) how many frames per second, or how long for say a 90 min movie, sure it depends on yr PC specs but just to get an idea...

Supposedly you can get about 3 hours watching video off the UMD disc, I would think a little more time for video off the Memory Stick since the unit would not have to spin it to play.

I have not had the chance to play a full movie on it since I need a bigger memeory stick to get one saved in good enough quality. I have been too busy playing the games too.

The PSPVideo9 software provides alot of flexibility in setting frame rates, audio rates etc. in order to compress the video down to size. I have not had the chance to find the best settings for me yet.

The 1 hour or so mpg2 about 1.2 G took about 60 - 80 mins. to compress to about 120 MB, the 30 min. 230 MB mpg1 took about 30 mins to compress to 45 MB. The full length 90 - 100 min. divx movie at about 800 MB must have taken about 90 mins to compress to 175 MB.

These are rough estimates since I do not have the files in front of me and I did not time them exactly.

I know there a few memory sticks available for the PSP, how much is the 1G stick?
I'm thinkin' you could probably fit a pretty fair amount of video on a 1G stick without a whole lot of compression, but don't know if it would really be worth it if the stick is too expensive.
