How do they do it?

I have an app, Camstudio, that caps streaming video from the desktop. Yet some video still only shows up as black ...similar to using "Print Screen" on a video window - it shows as black.

My question is: how do they keep what appears on the desktop from being captured by these apps designed specifically for that? Is this something new?

Nothing new. Turn of hardware accelaration in the software player and you can capture the video.
