Here's the story...
Got some TY's because I had heard that they were the higher caliber of DVD to use. I was using Ritek G04 and G05's but since they started crapping out (getting alot of CRC errors after burns) I needed a change. The problem started when I tried to rebackup a movie I have.
I just got an Epson R300 printer and I completely hosed up my backup of Gothika and was going to put it on a fresh disc. When I went to burn that's when the problems began. I started by verifying the integrity of the disc by running it through DVDShrink to make sure that I didn't come up with any CRC errors or the like. None found. Copied it to a local drive to burn right back with Nero. Started Nero, and at 1% it stops, the buffer stays at 100% but the progress refuses to get past 1%. Finally Nero says that it failed.
Next, I say forget Nero, let's try DVD Decryptor. So I create an ISO from the original DVD and try to burn with that. Decryptor does the same thing. It stops at 1% and refuses to continue and finally fails.
Two coasters so far.
Finally I get smart, uninstall Nero (6.3), reinstall a newer version I had gotten (6.6) and try simulation burning. All speeds (2x, 4x, 6x, 8x) fail.
I then updated the firmware on my drive, LiteOn 832S firmware VS0B, updated to VS0G. Popped in a fresh DVD and opened up CopyToDVD. Again, it froze at 1% and then died. So now I am at the end of my rope, I cannot believe all three of these apps could not burn a simple DVD. In case anyone is wondering, I originally backed up Gothika by cracking with Decryptor first, then reauthoring with DVDShrink, movie only, onto two discs. Simple burn, right?
I checked to make sure the DMA mode was correct. It is (not PIO). I ran DVDInfo to make sure I didn't have some bad media. Here are the media codes.

Which to me should be good quality, right?
The only thing I haven't tried is plain jane Nero 6, but I really doubt that will help me out here. Hoping someone has had a similar situation, though a search of the forums I haven't found one yet. The closest one I could find had a problem with labels and that was after the burn, not during. Any suggestions are welcome though![]()

Printing on the disk should be done after the burn is completed. Epson even recommends waiting 24 hrs for the ink to dry before playing.

Have you tried to burn with another burner? Maybe LiteOn is damaged.
I only have one burner. I know this is a wild notion but burning CD's with the drive shouldn't cause any problems like this should it?

The original backup plays fine, just that the art work is all hosed up and the discs that I am attempting to burn are all fresh unprinted ones.

If you can to get a burner from a friend or relative for some time to check. Maybe it is not bad idea to try to check the drive with some software - I think Nero has something like that in the package, or maybe something from LiteOn. I think with my Seagate HD I have a CD with different progs and some checking software also (it is HD though). What make me to think in this direction is that even the simulation burns failed!

Does anyone know if there any diagnostic tools available (with Nero or wherever) that could tell me if the drive is going out?
I really hope it's not the drive, since I got it last November or so and probably have done about 50 backups of DVD's with it and maybe 40 CD's or so. If it were, it would probably be the last LiteOn DVD burner that I get. -
An idea though - try to burn simply data CD (650-700 MB) with Nero and see if it makes the same.

I have been using Ritek G04 with a 100% success rate. We don't have a great range of brands available to us, and the prices of branded disks is still too high over here. Recently I found our local supermarket had Fujifilm 5 packs on the shelf at $3.95 a box. I checked - Japanese manufactured, so I bought two boxes. (Went back later to find they were meant to be $3.95 PER DISK!!!). These are TY disks, and so far I have had a 60% hit rate, burning at both 8x and 4x.
Maybe Ritek have turned to crap, and maybe we are so far behind here that we still have the good ones in stock, but so far they haven't failed me once.Read my blog here.

It's official, it's the drive, tried to burn one of the liteon discs that came with the drive, failed at the exact same location.
Time to give up on the LiteOn and try Sony or LG. -
I'd Look at Pioneer rather than LG and i urge you to do the same......

Pioneer.

Sony DVD burners are rebadged LiteON drives.
I would recommend (in no particular order) NEC (35x0), Pioneer 109, or BenQ 1620.
Nec drives offer many (unofficial) modified firmwares (increase speed/quality) from the user communitiy.
Note that Pioneer drives do not support bitsetting for DVD+R to DVD-ROM (only DVD+R DL), out of the box. This is not a problem if you only use DVD-R discs.
BenQ offers good quality, great official firmware support (including bitsetting), and good media support. Some people say dog is mans best friend. I say that man is dog's best slave... At least that is what my dogs think. -

If I was buying a new DVD burner today I would definately go with Pioneer.
I did once have an old (now) NEC ND-1300A that worked wonders (but only with good media like TY) but I seem to recall a thread or two about the new NEC DVD Burner having a lot of issues.
Pioneer seems the best all around from model to model from almost the very first one they made.
