  1. I have a HTPC with a NEC 3520 DL DDVD RW drive and when I play a back dvd(dvd +R) the disk drive is very very loud. However, when I play a store bought dvd in the drive it is very quiet.

The media I am using is Ridata +R burned on a NEC 3500.

What could possibly causing this? Ridata is a good brand isn't it? Where they burned incorrectly? What gives?

Not an un-common problem with DVD drives. Not sure why but some drives are very loud playing any burned disks but are quit when playing retail disks. Retail disks are pressed rather burned, perhaps that 's the reason.

It really shouldn't make more noise when playing back a burned DVD. Maybe the head is seeking the tracks more on burned disc than a factory disk.

Is the noise the disc spinning or the head seek? Also I have a few disks that seem to rub the tray when they spin up. You might describe the noise a little further.

I have a CD RW that spins up to 52X and sounds very loud but I never noticed that with a DVD drive.

CDs do this too. It's the media/drive combo.

  6. Most DVD recorders have a speed limit of 4x when reading a DVD ROM to avoid excessive noise and vibrations when playing a DVD movie. Manufaturers figure you will be sitting close when watching a movie, and limit the speed to avoid the distracting noise. A higher rpm rate can greatly magnify slight imperfections in the physical disc, which causes these noise problems. But, you get the full speed (and noise) when reading other formats such as +R, -R (as the 4x limit is not invoked). Some DVDs can be significantly worse than others, based on their balance. Ejecting and returning the tray might help.

He's not talking about the burning speed, but the READ speed.

My drive is ALREADY limited for burnable media, to 8x. But most of the time retail discs read at 4x, that's why it's quieter. If your drive doesn't limit burnables to 8x, it might be reading them at 16x, which is mac-truck loud on many drives.
